They built a brand new engine from the ground up. It is not an LT1 that was modified.

word, exactly right

and not to beat a dead horse but since you said you are new to gm engines, LS1 is more powerful than an LT1 in stock form, mainly bc of a better heads and cam package and some efficient design to start out with...but that doesnt mean its always better than the lt1 once you mod...both are good motors to mod

Also, some people prefer an iron block (LT1) to aluminum (LS1) just for strength issues. Obviously if you keep it pretty much stock you don't have anything to worry about but if you want to add alot of Nitrous or boost from a blower or both I would trust an iron block more than an aluminum not to mention if you over torque a bolt you risk stripping out the block and f*ck that. just my opinion

Ah, but that is why someone invented thread inserts (helicoils).

Stock for stock, yep the LS is better but the LT can make some good power.... at least thats what I've been told.

Make sure not to get confused... the 1998-2002 LS1 in the f-body is only related to the LT1 in the fact that it has 8 cylinders and displaces approximately 5.7L.......

Other than that the LS1 is, as mentioned, a "ground-up" redesign sharing no design component, piece, part, etc. with the Gen2 smallblock (LT1/LT4) or the Gen1 smallblock 350.....

The power difference comes from a superior head design, efficient block design, fairly aggressive stock cam, superior ignition system (individual coil packs), etc....

The good news is that for now the LT1 is much cheaper to build if you're building up a motor.... but the LS1 makes quite a bit more power stock for stock.

Its not superior in hp, and torque, its superior in costing more to fix and breaking down when you drive aggressively.
