Maybe its just the engineer in me, but I hope the gains of this mod are better than the traditional CAI gains as to offset the structural deficiency that MAY now now present due to cutting up a boxed section of the frame. This portion of the frame is now weakened by some amount, this can not be disputed. It may be a trivial amount, it may not.

I will speculate that the 1998 and up Camaros dont use a similar modded support, I am confident that is why they have the taller hood so the air box can be just directly bolted on.

This is also the frame support I used several times to lift by when pulling the motor out the bottom, I would be leary of doing that with this modded support as shown above.

The conversion does look good and clean though, definitely NOT a hack job like I have seen on some other rides.

if people take off their sway bar, I dont see any problem with hacking a little stuff here or there.

looks great buddy! i thought i would not be able to fit with a stock hood? is that why you did some cutting? you should gain a little over a normal CAI, air likes a smooth route, over a twisty one.

How do you run your plug wires from the top without burning them on the headers. And where did you get the wire kit from?

I got it off Thunder racing came with taylor wires, and all the looms ect..
I have pacesetter LT's they come straight up from the plugs they aren't even close to any of the primaries.

I also have pacesetters so I guess I will be ordering those; because I have a slight miss and I have factory wires on the passenger side.

I think I'm gonna look around under the hood and do some brainstorming to figure out a way to do this and do something with the wanna be hood vents and see if I can figure out some kind of thing that way. I'm new to f-bodies, but I'm guessing that the bottom of the box is open, and I'm guessing that the black sheet metal is cut around the bottom of the box, it should be a really good cold air and ram air system. Have you noticed any difference?

thats a lot of work and hacking of somewhat important parts for maybe 3hp...not to mention part of your filter is blocked by the radiator and another is blocked by the rest of the radiator support that you didnt cut. definitely not worth the time, effort, or cost of cutting into my car when a CAI for $130 can be had and still performs well

yeah, except that he spent 60$, and had something productive to keep himself busy for a weekend, and also did something i see question threads about all the m-f-ing time... he said he didnt do it for the gain, or for the people out here who would say it was a waste of time.

that being said, it looks good, im glad some of us finally have some closure on whether or not its possible to do this

thank you you hit the nail on the head it gave me a challenge, and something to do and I enjoyed, oh and actually no half the filter is not blocked by the rad. I actually leaned it back so....yeah, Maybe this weekend I can get a pic with the lid off and show the filter.

So what happens when you want to go back to something else? just going to leave a hole there under your radiator support, hell cleaning the LT1 engine bay is a challenge enough and can keep someone busy but more power to you, not like a LS1 lid is proven to flow so much better then a CAI anyways and what big power guys turn to this for that extra power. Props on the effort even though i believe it was very much misguided

I could go back to my SLP cai if I wanted, pull the radiator back up a little put the old radiator cover back on witch goes over the hole, witch
isn't as big as you think, and thats about it..

as he said at the beginning of this thread dont post if you dont like it, if you dont think it was a great idea then keep moving to another thread.

it wasnt a lot of work, it took probably 3 hours. hp gains werent in mind, mostly appearance. as he said the filter is not as blocked as you think, not that much more than the ls1 is blocked. this mod performs just as well if not better than the lt1 cai, as the air has a less restricted route to enter into the manifold.

if we ever put it back to the way it was b4 we did this mod it would only take 10 mins. the piece we cut out can be welded back on if needed in no time at all, it doesnt even need to be put back on, the stock cover covers it all anyway. but thanks for your input!!

Sure is, Irish350, which is why I spend so little time on these forums. It's just a bunch of bench racers arguing....
