LS1 brake upgrade ??'s

I am using my z28 for a road course track car (this weekend is my first weekend with the z28.) Previously, I ran my z06, but after crashing into a wall, I thought the z28 may be a better choice...anyway, the z06 brakes were pretty good, I would like to get something comparable on the Z28. I see the LS1 brakes are pretty cheap, looking at a pic on ebay, they look just like the corvette brakes, ? is are they the same? That would be very nice.

The upgrade path is going to be
1. brakes
2. suspension
3. roll cage
4. engine

I'm getting ready to do this on my 97 Firehawk (got the LS1 kit off Ebay). The LS1 f-body brakes are based on the C5 Corvette brakes. The only differences are that the calipers are cast on the f-body versus pressure cast on the C5, the rotors on the f-body are about 1" smaller in diameter, and the pads are a slightly different size. What this means is 1) you can't use C5 pads on an LS1 f-body caliper (without some grinding anyway) and 2) the f-body calipers will "spread" sooner than a C5 caliper. You can run the C5 caliper in the f-body braket with minor trimming of one of the cooling fins, but I wouldn't bother, it's a little stronger but it will still spread over time too.

thanks for the info...It would be nice to use the same pads.. since I currently use the pfcz pads from autozone, and bring them back after every event for new ones. I will try to get an ls1 setup on ebay, what is the going price?

thanks!

If you liked the C5 brakes on your Vette, why not throw them on your F-body? The C5 brake conversion is becoming more common but still a rarity. Either way its the best value compared to an aftermarket brake system. My C5 brakes are going on soon (when it warms up ).

I'm in the same boat on pads, the Autozone PFCZ lifetime pads were just to good of a deal to pass up.

As to the LS1 upgrade kit price, normally they go for a little over $200 + shipping (about $60 if I remember correctly). Acutally, I tell you what, I 'm having second thoughts about installing my kit (thinking about just gettin a big brake kit), so if you are interested, I'll sell you the LS1 kit I've got for $260 shipped.

the way i drive, the z06 brakes were adequate, but no more. I use a set of pads and rotors each weekend. That said, I am worried about the same brakes on a heaver car. This weekend I am going to roebling, which is easy on brakes.

LT4, if you want to sell those brakes I may be interested...why are you having second thoughts?

While I think the LS1 brakes would be fine for track use by using a different set of pads/rotors for street and track use, I'm thinking about going with some Wilwoods or something similar for extreme performance and for looks. Since the car is so unique, it would be nice to have brakes that really stand out at car shows and other events.

I got the LS1 front brake upgrade from TA Creations for about $250. The parts came off of a wrecked car and I had to end up getting a new upright or what ever its called. I cant think o fit right now. It was still pretty inexpencive and the difference is night and day. I am very pleased with it and it was great at the track. Good luck what ever you do. A lot of people are going to the C5 set up but between the two I dont know if there would be that much of a difference.

I agree with Matt on the difference to the C5 brakes. I think the biggest difference between the LS1 and C5 brakes is in the pads. I know 2000TA I had seemed to have about the same braking ability at the track as the Z06 when equivalent pads were used. The consensus from most of the f-body guys with LS1 brakes that run roadcourse events is that with proper pads they will brake as hard as needed.

Used to be, changed my ID on CF since I got rid of the Z06. I think my next Vette will be back to a C4, just feels more like a "true" sportscar. I've got the same id on just about all the boards now.

An SS has premium suspension for auto x where Z28 has better straight-line suspension...no big deal, just means more work for ya...

SO whats the advantage of the LS1 Brakes? bigger rotors and calipers to suport them or what? are they just a direct replacement? Is it a hard replacement? Im in need of brakes on my car, and im either doin Powerslot rotors on my 93 or thinking of the LS1 kit.... someone convince me why one is better~
