Lowering Oil Pan to replace gasket

Hey all, currently i have my trans, clutch setup, and flywheel out of the car. I will be doing a cam soon. I would like to also replace my oil pan gasket, i have reason to belive it is leaking abit. I dont want to take the pan out, just drop it alittle to get a new gasket on, is this possible? Ideas, suggestions, guides, welcomed :-)

I hear its possible but a major PITA. IMHO since you already have your tranny out and stuff you might as well jack up one side of the motor and pull your pan all the way out. This will also give you a chance to see if there is anything in the bottom of your pan.

Good idea, though i am curious how it is a PITA, with my trans out how hard can is possible be to get the bolts that go around it, jack the motor up, pry the pan off and pull it from the back through where the trans was. Am I thinking of this wrong?

I ment putting a new gasket on with the pan still under the block would be a PITA.

Anyone, is it possible to unbolt the pan, drop it 1 or 2 inches and pull it out of the back of the car with the trans out?

The oil pump pickup is almost at the bottom of the pan. You'll need at least 6-7" inches to lower the pan before moving it frt to back or lft to rt.

Well, I saw in your other thread that you're looking at doing a cam too. If I was in your shoes I would pull the headers off and pull the motor out the top. You're going to have almost everything else off it anyway. It should be less time and agrivation to just pull it instead of fighting it while in the car.

Before you lower the oil pan, remove the low oil sensor from the pan, if you dont you will break it off and have broken plastic pieces at the bottom of the pan, then the pan will have to come all the way off to clean out the plastic piceces.

I am still trying to figure out the BEST way to change this gasket without pullin the motor. I guess i cn jack the motor up 2 inches or so and drop the pan on the k member and replace the gasket, but i am sure its gonna be a PAIN removing the gasket surface from the passenger side. Ideas?

Told ya. Just be lazy like me and try some RTV. If that doesn't work leave it alone since it is just a minor leak.

It leaks pretty bad now that i think about it when the engine is warm and the oil gets thiner from the heat. I will literaly see drops (size of half dollars) drop every so often.
You use copper RTV I assume?

YES you can pull the pan without pulling the motor. I completely replaced my oil pan due to a crack from bottoming out. It is somewhat of a pain because it is a tight fit. You have to undo both motor mount bolts and raise the engine until it is pressing against the firewall (as high as it will go). You will then be able to remove the bolts and the pan.

Good luck!

Sounds like RTV might be the best solution until you pull your motor.

My stock one tore after pulling timing cover off. I replaced it with a felpro. I did not have to jack motor or anything like that. The pan dropped enough to side the gasket around pan. Here is a pic after I installed it.
