low oil press, knocking sound..HELP, long

I did cam swap, cloyes, headers and ele. w/p bout 700 miles ago. Car ran fine, but didnt know I had a blown head gasket before I did all the mods it got real hot a few days before I tore it apart. Anyways, I fixed the head gasket now I got some major probs. After I replaced the head gasket the car had strange oil pressure, normal one minute, very low the next. Sometimes at idle it would be allittle above the 1/4 mark, look at it a second later and it drops real close to the red. The car wants to "hang" around 2-3k rpms quite a bit, and want to die when u come to a stop. Car has NO power at all, but runs smooth, no miss-fire that I can "feel" anyways. It developed a BAD knock ablout the same time, it was coming from the clutch area. It only knocked when the pedal was pushed in, it went away when u let out on the pedal. So it sounded like the throwout bearing to me, well, I just replaced it and the noise is still there. I was thinking maybe the pcm was dectecting the knock and pulling timing, not sure. When u rev. it up with the pedal pushed in the knock gets worse. The pilot bearing looked fine, input shaft on trans. seemed to be ok, WTF is making this noise. Its got to be clutch related, seems like anyways. I checked for vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks and everything appears to be fine, far as the engine. I'm gonna put a oil press. gage on it tomm. to check out whats up with that. But I can't figure out what the hell this noise is. Thrust bearing on crank? pilot bearing? main bearing? I didnt beat the hub on, so I dont think I hurt the thrust bearing. This noise is loud as hell. The whole clutch assembly looked fine, actully was surprised at how good the disk and PP looked, went back together with no probs. Sorry so long, any suggestions are welcome. Car has 80k on it by the way, all mods in sig.

Noises are hard to diagnose on the internet. From your engine history, I would be more prone to say you have a bearing problem caused by your blown head gasket. You might want to check your oil for metal. I hope I am way off base.

I guess thats bad when a person u never meet is familiar with your engine history from helping u out with all your probs. in the past I know noises are hard to hear when ya cant hear em wish I could post it. I hope u are way off base also there shoe!! I'm was planning on getting the basement dug for my new house this week, now this damn car has to act up again Whats the best way to check the oil for metal, run a magnet across the bottom of the pan towards the drain hole?? I just cant understand the deal with pushing the pedal in, the noise is still dectectble with it out, but its like turning on a "KNOCK" button when u push in the pedal and rev it up. The motor sounds good from the top, no noise, i adjusted the rockers also. No blue smoke out the exhaust, although it burns your eyes like its waay rich, but the plugs are clean looking?? I'm wondering if I have a timing issue also Sometimes do u ever wish u never started modding your car, I'm thinking that right now.

Do a search for Dave88LX. He had a spun bearing a while back and it turned out to be a great learing post. I really hope thats not your problem, but you have a good reference to work off of. Good Luck

I think of that video of Dave's every time someone says something about a knock.

All I can say is: Check your oil, oil filter, oil pressure, etc. Having just purchased a new short block following spun bearing (s) I can tell you that it will be much cheaper if it is not your bottom end. If you do have some bearings going out, you might at least be able to minimize the damage if you get to it now.JMHO

Ugh, yeah I cringe when I think of that sound. I'm scared to flog my new engine in the Mustang for fear of a knockin' sound coming about :shudder:

Here's the video here:

Good luck!

Not sure exactly what happened...but if you look at the lifter pics, you can see that a couple must have locked up

Just an excuse to buy better pieces eh?

But seriously, it's a PITA, everything in the engine got trashed!
