Low Oil light

My "low oil" light comes on when I start the car. If I start it and kill it then start again it stays off. With the car warmed up the oil is just below the full mark on the dipstick.

When we were under it the other day I did notice that the connector was pretty covered in oil and seemed to be leaking a bit around the sensor in the pan. Should I replace the sensor?

Re: Low Oil light

I had that same problem on my old car and it was a cut wire. It's funny how sometimes it was on and sometimes it wasn't, with no connection to the sensor at all. Check your wiring first.

Re: Low Oil light

I checked the oil again over lunch. Still full. I think it is a wire or something, because the light comes on and stays on as soon as you turn the key. I have seen the light come on when you run low on oil, usually comes on going down the road.

Guess Ill be under it tonight. Again.

Re: Low Oil light

Still have oil up to the top hole/marker on the dipstick.

Got underneath and re tied my o2 wires (were hanging) and checked the wire to the oil level sensor. As far as I can see/feel up the side of the transmission the wire looks ok. I guess I will swap the sensor on my next oil change.

I don't even have to start it to get it to go away. I can turn the car to run for @ 10secs, turn it back to acc then start it without the light staying on. If I start it first thing the light stays on till I kill the car.

Re: Low Oil light

Yeah same here. I was at the track when mine came on. First time out with the ET streets and I pulled a 1.8 60' and then that light came on. I took my foot out of it and went back to the pit area and I had full oil. It stays on now because i'm lazy. First thing it comes on and when I drive for like 10 secs then turn the car off and then back on it's away. Same with my damn low coolant light and once again i'm too lazy to fix it.

Odd, I was at the track, destoyed my clutch, towed it home. After setting for 3 weeks the first time I drove it this happened. I will change the sensor in a few weeks, just changed the oil recently so no need to pull it now.

Re: Low Oil light

The reason the light goes out after you turn the ignition off and back on is that there is a drainback timer that starts when the ignition is turned off. If the required elapsed time is not met (35 minutes if the engine is cold or 4 minutes if the engine is hot [hot defined as having run a minimum of 17 minutes]), then the oil level checking function of the cluster will not apply.

Re: Low Oil light

Well my light does the same thing, but my oil sensor is always unplugged. During my rebuild I got a new oil pan without a hole for it.

Re: Low Oil light

I found lots of old threads with this problems, none listing a solution for whomever started the thread. I will unplug it and short it out. That should tell me that its the wires if the light stays on, or the sensor if the wires go off.

Thanks everyone.
