Low Coolant Light

My low coolant light comes on from time to time when the car starts to heat up. The car is by no means low. I have check the level and it is full and the resevoir is full also. Could my sensor be bad?? And this is the sensor on the side of the block right??

Very common for the sensor to go bad. The sensor is located on the radiator, just below the fill neck.

Re: Low Coolant Light

I had my sensor go out once. Did the excact same thing (show that coolant was low when it wasn't). OBE1 is right, the sensor is just below the fill neck of your radiator on the back side. You may want to drain some coolant first, because if you pop out the sensor when your radiator is full, some will drain out of where the sensor goes.

Biggest thing is just make sure everything is cool first so you don't burn yourself. I am not calling you an idiot, but a friend of mine recently burned himself badly with coolant because he didn't want to wait 20 minutes for everything to cool off.

So when you get a real leak your only warning will be the steam coming out from under your hood; I hope you like changing head gaskets

The car is a 97 and has 24,XXX miles. I rarely drive it, and when I do, I always check it out.

How in the heck did people drive in the old days without sensors?? Must of been a miracle.

Re: Low Coolant Light

I had mine unplugged for years... I'd notice a major coolant leak quickly

That being said, here's a tip... when changing that sensor, pull your battery out, it will make it MUCH easier to reach and change. It is very common for that sensor to go bad, I replaced it recently finally.

All my money right now is being saved for a Spec so I think unplugging it will do, LOL.

In the old days you had an idiot light that came on when you engine was about to melt down; car manufacturers have gotten smarter to give us early warning of problems as long as we're smart enough not to disable them
