loud ticking

went into resteraunt last night for a couple drinks and came out like 2 hours later, started car and immidiately there was a loud ticking noise(knocking). still has good oil pressure and normal power, not overheating. almost sounds like a collapsed lifter or something

my question is what is the possibility of a lifter collapsing while eating dinner like that, when i get out of work today i am going to pull the valve covers to check for loose rockers

Doon't over look your spark plugs being loose. I just redid my wires and found that some of my plugs had worked loose creating that irritating tapping noise. Gave my plugs a good tightening and no more noise.

na this is def in the motor sounds like either a wrist pin(god i hope not) or a collapsed lifter which is what im hoping for. only mods are magnaflow cat back, now that i think about it, it could be a bent pushrod i guess. happened late last night so i did not get a chance to look at it yet

when my wrist pin came loose it sounded like a chatter (on deceleration only). A tap would be valvetrain if you ask me, like you said a lifter or a bent pushrod. I dont see how either of those could have happened while you where at the restaurant, doesnt make sense. I would check under the valvecovers. If you have stock valvetrain that is strange though, did you drive it hard right before this happened?

This also happened with my cammed 5.0 fox mustang, after cruising to someones house and then started it up about a few hours later, I had a collapsed lifter. So it is possible. I used that to warrant my 460 big block swap lol.

Could be bent pushrods. One of my friends had a ticking sound that sounded like an exhaust leak that kept getting louder and louder, someone recommended him to take a look at his pushrods and sure enough about six were bent. They were bent marginally, or to a great degree but enough to make the sound. He changed them and the ticking went away.
