Loud pitch screaming noise when I start the car..

When I go to start the car there is a high pitched screaming noise. I was thinking maybe the belt was slipping but it only does it when I start the car and while holding the key forward. My next guess of course is starter...but is that a sign of a dying one, etc?

Any idea what could be wrong?

Does it stop when you release the key while starting up? If it stops when you let go of the key, you are holding the key too long. Otherwise, it sounds like the starter interfering with the flywheel. Check to make sure its not loose.

Im defenitly not holding the key too long. It happens from the moment I turn the key till I let off...Ill go check the starter..

Cool

Make sure the starter gear is engaging the flywheel. There may be too much clearance and it's caused the flywheel teeth to wear down and now it's spinning on each other.

Did you put an aftermarket flywheel on the car? There's a chance you need to shim the starter away from the flywheel, it could be binding up a bit...

Step 1: Pop the hood
Step 2: Grab pliers or pipe wrench
Step 3: Remove cat from belts
Step 4: Close hood
Repeat as necessary.

Matt I had to shim the starter with my Street Twin. Without them I get a very unpleasant grinding noise.
