Looking for exhaust Ideas

What is the best rig for an F-body headers to tips? I do not want it to sound like a truck, I actually want a low roar to it that is somewhat muffled. Right now I have flow masters on it and I love the sound. Trying to recreate it with an entire exhaust system.

I plan on this being the next upgrade but I am not sure if I will get the most for my money. What would be a good upgrade as far as engine work goes(ie horsepower for the money). I have a short throw shifter, functional ss hood with air box, and flow masters. I want to turn it into a beast and I am looking for the best way to start. Need professonal advice. Thanks for your help.

Re: Looking for exhaust Ideas

I am completely new to the Camaro, however here are my thoughts. If you want a low rumble, get some nice headers, but keep the cats on there. They act as mini resonators to keep the high pitch noise to a minimum and keep the low grumble to a max. As far as making a "beast" there are obviously many ways, as with all cars. Would you like to stay NA or go forced indution? Maybe nitrous? What is the price range we have to work with? Hope I can be of some help.

Eventually it will go forced but that is out of my range right now. Maybe $1000 plus whatever labor is, unless I cna do it myself. But I am looking for brands of headers and cat back system configs. Or from the headers back.

Best bang for the buck always seems to be LT headers, Intake, slicks, gears. That is ulitmately the fastest way. If you are going turbo dont bother with headers as you will need bent manifolds for the turbo anyways. However all NA mods are great for a Centrifugal SuperCharger, except some cam combos where you may need extra high end power and revving capabilities to really utilize the CSC.

Re: Looking for exhaust Ideas

My setup:

Used hooker lt headers $200
2 used flowmaster 40s $50ish
Labor / Mats to install it $35 (friend owns a muffler shop)

2 1/2" duals with an h pipe and dumped at the axle

To me it is the best sounding setup I have ever heard. It flows enough that it shouldn't be choking me too bad. Real deep sound down low and lots of grunt up top, just without the rice sound that bullets make. (flame suit on) Sounds muscle all the way through the power band.

I want to make a clip, but my motor still isn't done.

A full exhaust system can easily run you over a grand, if you do what the member above did and buy your stuff used you can get away with a budget exhaust. I probably paid 1500.00 for my exhaust from front to back.

For the sound, and performance you are seeking, I would go with some rksport shorty headers (like Arizona Speed and Marine, - the price), with any cheap attaching y-pipe, and then a Magnaflow catback. It is not the most expensive set up out there, but definatly quality, and the Magnaflow will give you the sound I think you are looking for.

Thanks for the tips. My engine has eleventy billion miles, but taken care of. I want to do forced induction but also not ready to blow up the current enginne yet. I think I might just do a coated long tube set up with y-pipe and find someway to keep those flow masters on. Then I must decide on supercharger or turbo. Not sure about that STS. Friends who know alot about turbos are concerned about the intake being at the back in prime flooding territory. What are the otehr thoughts. And plumming issues, MAN THAT IS ALOT OF PIPES!!

My exhaust setup isn't too loud. I always get guys telling me to put the Borla system on there. I am running the stock 96-97 SS muffler with slp headers and no cat. It has a very nice sound that I think is not obnoxious at all.

Jet hot long tubes, no cats, Bassani true dual with x-pipe, Bassani (Magnaflow spec) muffler, tips at the rear bumper. Not a budget set-up, but sounds like and f-body should IMO.

Holy rusted thread batman.

Since the above I have had
-glass packs dumped (dump truck)
-over the axle 2.5" duals with sweet thunders
-now going back to 3" dumped bullets

of all of them the 40s dumped was the absolute best sounding. And maybe not ideal for performance, not much of a loss either.

Im running shorty headers, full duals and dumping underneath the rear end. It has a nice low growling rumble. I had it ran straight out the back but it sounded too much like a truck to me so i had it all chopped off and some turndowns attached to the mufflers. If you dont want the rumble to be heard from inside the car i would not suggest turndowns, i wanted to hear and feel mine.

Headers- 50.00 off fleabay
Mufflers- 100.00
install- 400.00 at local exhaust shop

I have pacesetter LT's w/ y-pipe, Hooker catback, and borla tips (the round ones) which the gf got me.

Edit: and a DMH electric cut out right before the axle. I love that thing.
