Longtube or Shorties
Longtube or Shorties
Whats the difference between going with longtubes or shorties? What else will I need to do headers? (Y Pipe, a whole new catback??)
I didn't know if there was any major performance difference between longtubes or shorties..
Any help would be appreciated

Long tubes are generally 1 3/4 inch primary, while shorties are usually 1 5/8 inch primaries I've noticed. Long tubes make more power over shorties. Long tubes generally are not emissions legal due to relocation of the cats, with the exception of the FLP setup. Shorties are mostly all emissions legal and retain all factory EGR and AIR tubes.
Long tubes = Best power
Shorties = pass emissions.
That said, what about mid length (AZ Speed and Marine, Mac which are 1 5/8", SLP, and others)
These are generally a good compromise between the long/short tube headers. They all make good power, AZ's being the best because I'm biased, and all have emissions hookups.
Prices may vary.

Depends on the package you have for your engine. What have you done so far with your car? Is smog an issue? Some longtubes relocate the Cats and O2 sensors... should be careful with those. Most shorties accomodate the stock exhaust set up.
Im in Indiana, so emissions is not an issue at all.. My car is totally stock.
I wanted long tubes, but am on a VERY tight budget.. Thats why I was wondering if it could be bolted onto the stock exhaust or if I have to get a whole new cat back

Well, long tubes, especially hookers, are budget friendly. You do have to get a custom y pipe made, but that should'nt be too expensive. Actually, I think someone out there already makes a y-pipe for the hookers. Someone with Hooker LT's chime in here.

Mufflex makes a y-pipe for the hooker LT. Go to www.thunderracing.com
see... my biggest thing on headers is finding a place where you can get a good deal. the MAC mid-lengths w/ off-road y-pipe are supposed to be good headers for good prices. the best price i found on those was $499.99 at ls1speed.com. if anybody knows a cheaper place to get them at, clue me in.
