Longtube Comparisons

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything to really answer what I need to know. I am on the hunt for a set of LTs and Y-Pipe and I have narrowed my choice down a bit.

1)Hooker-$553.99 Canadian no y-pipe included
2)Pacesetter- I think I was quoted around 459.99 with Y-Pipe, not sure if they come coated.
3)SLP - $823.95, Cermix Coated but you may(probably will) have to get an installation kit it looks like which sells seperatey for $100. I believe the Y-pipe is included with this one.

So other then the huge price difference in between them, was is the major difference? They all seem to be made the same, they all promise up to 20HP depending on what your running. What would make you go one way or the other?

Re: Longtube Comparisons

The SLPs are actually mid length headers and they are made of stainless steel, which means when the coating wears off they wont rust like the hookers or pacesetters. The SLPs will have the best ground clearance followed by pacesetter then hooker, as for plug access i think the pacesetter and hooker are pretty good and the SLPs are tight in a couple places. For the SLP instilation kit all you really need (if you buy your own bolts and gaskets) is the 2 gaskets that fit between the headers and Y pipe and a few bolts, you can get those at a muffler shop.

Re: Longtube Comparisons

I was in the same bath and i took almost a year to think about it and i remember what my mom always told me:

"Do it once,do it right."

I then purchase top of the line suspension and rear end.

For headers i ve order some Kooks Long Tube and y-pipe .They will not rust since they re made of stainless. Also you dont need to coat stainless steel since they keep heat better(less transfer).

The finish quality of the product is awesome and the fittement is perfect. They tuck in really weel compare to the hooker and a couple of headers

A bit pricy(1065.00$) but i dont care, headers are a pain to install so i choose too pick up the best i can get.

Re: Longtube Comparisons

It would probably be a toss up between the SLPs and the Pacesetters. The Pacesetter will most likely give more power and yield better plug access and will be the cheapest of all three you have listed. The SLPs will be more emissions friendly and offer better product quality.

Yes, my LT coated pacesetters cost $390 shipped from speed-engineering two months ago. They are the deal.

Re: Longtube Comparisons

Yea I kinda fell in the same thing. I went with FLP's longtubes that cost me $1250.00. They came with y-pipe, quick change off-road pipes and quick change cats. I am glad I did it right the first time, because headers suck to put in on our cars. Everything is coated and I can say to this day they look the same as when I bought them. Which was 3 years ago. I hear alot of people complain about the coating coming off or the pipes rusting. Do alot of thinking on this because you only want to do this once. John

Re: Longtube Comparisons

I always go for the best bang for the buck. I went with brand new, coated, race long tube pacesetters with aluminized y pipe. Got it all for 400 shipped to my door! Now come on, are headers selling for more than double that really worth it? Some may say yes. But, I am not made of money, and with the motor built by me I put down 422rwhp UNTUNED! It was running pig rich, and my small 52mm TB was killing me on the top end. I now have a 58mm, just need time to install it and hit the dyno again. Im hopin for 440RWHP...

Best bang for buck, PACESETTER! plug access is way better than the RK Sports I had...

They look great under the hood too, and I dont have the problem with the pass side that everyone seems to be complaining about under hard acceleration... mine doesn't hit the pass floorboard. I have polly motor mounts and tranny mount though.

Hope this helps bud!

Re: Longtube Comparisons

I have Jet Hots (basically Hooker clones) and I got them for $500 shipped. Ground clearance and plug access are great, but the coating seems to not hold up in certain spots. Particularly in the middle of where all of the primaries come together for the collector. Other than that, I'm happy with them.

Speed-Eng has run them on special quite often and you can snag them for around that.

Once I redo my exhaust I am going to pitch the Pacesetters and go with Kooks. I've just not been 100% won over with the Pacesetters.

While I'll certainly agree that they are pricey, they are, by far, the best looking, fitting, ground clearance, quality of any header I've ever used...and they will support whatever I'll ever think of throwing at them (I have the stepped 1 3/4 to 1 7/8)...They'll be the last header you buy...Do it once, do it right...You'll thank me later...
