Exclamation Long black support along side the driveshaft?!?

Trying to do a clutch install today and im about to drop the driveshaft and then the tranny. Does this long black support need to be removed? If so is it just the two bolts on the rearend that hold it there? Thanks

Aaron

That long black support is your torque arm. It would make it easier to remove the tranny if you removed it.

correct, remove the two bolts from off the rear end, you are going to have to put supports under the frame with the car lifted in the air to let the rear axle hang down, for some odd reason from the factory GM put the bolts in long ways from the top???? don't ask me why, when I put them back in I slid them in from the bottom and and screwed the nut on from the top...

It can be a pain to get those bolts in from the top but that way if the nuts were to ever back off the bolt could not fall out. They probably wont ever come off if torqued right but if they did fall out it could be ugly. I was going to put them back from the bottom until I thought about that happening.

I actually thought about that to, but I was thinking in the future of when I would have to change a clutch out again, because I mean there is hardly any clearance what soever...but you are right, things have the possibility of getting ugly if ever a bolt backed out...

actually speaking of getting ugly, I forgot to tighten up the bracket for the torque arm bushing on the transmission...woah!! man any time you put a load on the transmission that thing would hit the floor board, I use to work at this place that had these ridged speed bumps(a series of little bumps in a row) , man it sounded like my car was falling apart, the security guard gave me the wierdest look when I drove by him. It took me forever to figure out it was the Torque arm bushing bracket...so be sure to tighten those bolts down all the way...
