lobe separation angle

What exactly does lobe separation angle mean? If the LSA is 114* what does that mean. Also how is valve overlate measured in, and what is a good number to consider in a performance engine?

LSA is the Lobe Seperation Angle or the number of degrees between the intake and exhaust lobe centerlines.

For some reason I thought that lobe seperation angle was the measure in degrees that the lobe centers were seperated...

Example: max lift on intake to max lift on exhaust in degrees = LSA

If you have a longer stroke, do you want a larger LSA?

Typically, the more cubes you run, the larger the cam.

For example, a 383 will gobble up the smaller cams like the cc 304, Hotcam, etc... You get better results from larger cams like 236/242 and such when dealing with larger cubed motors.

This is just what I have seen from doing a lot of reading.
