Hi Art, Anytime you have poor fuel mileage, the place to start is with a tune up. We don't have information on your car as to mileage etc, but I'd clean or replace the air filter, replace the plugs and spark plug wires, and replace the fuel filter.

You might also consider changing the oxygen sensors as well.

Re: little help

around 20k miles on rebuilt engine and trans was done by previous owner at a local shop. Ive been thinking my fuel pump may be going bad and thats why it is having a hard time starting because when i cycle the key on two to three times i can hear the pump and i usually have to give it some throttle to get it started any other info you need that will help let me know

Re: little help

Plugs should be good if only 20,000 miles on them. You could pull one that's easy to get to and check the condition and the gap. They can tell you a lot on what might be wrong by the color, if it has oil or gas and how the tip is. I would replace the fuel filter, check all the plug wires for damage and check the fuel pressure while driving. How many miles on the car? Maybe the O2's should be replaced if they are original and you have high miles on the car. Is the opti new when you did the rebuild?

Re: little help

Does the car still have a catalytic converter?

Running rich can be caused by misfires, exhaust leaks before the O2 sensors, faulty O2 sensors or wiring.
