limits of the LT1?

This should be posted over at impalassforum.com, but our forum is down now. I figured there was probably more experience here anyway.

My question is what is the limit of a stock bottom end LT1? Right now I am running ~8psi on it. I am considering running ar 50 HP wet shot on it. The car isn't my daily driver. I only put about 1200 miles per year on the car and I don't take it down the dragstrip very often. I know it's probably different car-to-car because I have seen some guys run 250 HP nitrous jets on a stock bottom end with no problems while others destroy the engine with a 75 shot. I already have all the other supporting mods I would need except for a fuel pressure safety switch. (I would be getting that as well if I decide to spray.) So should I go for it? If it blows, it's really not a problem. I will do it if you guys think it will last a while.

It will last.... 8psi plus a 50 WET shot... the extra 50hp with the extra fuel going in to the intake is putting damn near no extra strain on the motor than there already is.

OK. Since it is a forced induction car, will a 50 shot give more than 50 extra HP due to the cooling effects of the compressed air?

Its very possible but dont expect too much more than that. If you have no intercooler you can expect to see you 50hp plus a little more.

I'm not really sure of the answer, but I'd love to take a ride in that luxo-monster! You'd probally get more answers in the Forced Induction section though!

Thanks mysticteal. I have pics at community.webshots.com/user/hastyss

I think I'll go ahead and try the nitrous. The supercharger is intercooled, but I would still like to cool the intake air a little more. Thanks for all the input guys.

Forced induction... AND nitrous? Boy ya got the best of both worlds~

Have you consitered putting nitrous through the intercooler fins? Probably would get more gains running it though the engine though...

Yes, I have considered spraying it through the intercooler. I may just hook the purge valve to spray across the intercooler. Would that have an effect?

I think it wouldn't hurt... Probably wouldn't help unless sprayed constant

I just thought I would give it a really long purge before making a run at the strip. The purge just wastes nitrous into the atmosphere anyway. I might as well try to use it for something. Maybe I could just get one of those intercooler spray bars and route the purge line to the input on that.

Purging before a run won't do anything, you need to spray the intercooler during a run. But spraying the nitrous into the actual intake charge will net a larger gain and cool down the intake charge more than spraying it thorugh the i/c.

Re: limits of the LT1?

I ran my TA for 2 years running 9 lbs of boost then she blew, probably only 4000 miles on it in that time but it was hard miles. adding spray to a stock LT1 your looking to break a ring land there already known for it when running boost the added cylender pressure and heat from the N20 is really going to push it to its limits, if your not worried abuot blowing it go for it it will be fun while it lasts. as far as spraying the intercooler thats what Im going to do, just using the purge will helpsome but not a lot, its better than wasting it, but spraying it the hole time will really cool the IAT down.
