Is this a Lifter Tick? *Video Clip available*
Is this a Lifter Tick? *Video Clip available*
Hey guys, having ****loads of problems with teh car after heads/cam.
I have a noise that is kinda like a ticking but kinda like something bouncing around in the f'n motor.
I need someone to host this video clip if I send it to them over AIM. My upload through IE and FTP clients are too damn slow and always time out.
If you can help me out, please send an AIM to LT1guy95

Tried "listening" in with a pipe against the valve covers, however doesnt seem to be working. The ticking is pretty loud so you can hear it regardless. And when you stand on one side of the motor, it sounds like it is coming from the other side, and vise versa
Gonna drain the oil later today and cut the filter open and see waht we find.

I had a lifter go bad in mine which caused a ticking sound. It sounded like a valve tap. I found it by removing the valve cover and starting the engine. Don't worry, it won't spray oil all over the place. Then put a mechanics stethoscope on each rocker stud. You will know the one when you hear it. Then try adjusting the lash to make sure it is not an adjustment problem.
None of that worked for me so I started pulling it apart and found the roller surface on the number 1 cylinder had chips in it and so did the cam lobe. It was a good excuse to replace the cam with an LT4 cam which was the best thing I ever did to it. Took about 45 hours and $800 - 900 of parts. The old lifter makes a nifty paper weight on my desk!

well both valve covers are off, nothing looks out of the ordinary. However, Combo told me that i can have a collapsed lifter yet the rocker nuts will still be tight, so the rocker would still be loose since the lifter isnt taking up the slack.
so im gonna try to adjust the rockers tonight, make sure the pushrods are straight.

I changed the oil, oil that came out of the pan looks fine, however when you stir it up with your finger it turns a greyishwhitish color, is that normal?
the filter was loaded with metal shavings, looked like someone dumped glitter in it.
anyone got ideas?

Obviously the metal shavings in the oil aren't good. Could have spun a bearing...
Let the oil you drained sit for a bit and see if water floats to the top.

I just dropped a 1" x 1/2" x 1/4" thick magnet in the oil that was in the filter. I literally dropped it in, swished the bucket around and pulled it out. Honest to God, there is 3/8" of metal buildup on each end of the magnet.
I meant that adjusting the rocker did not eleminate the ticking sound so I had to go deeper. Sorry to hear about the filings. Try this link. He gives a complete pictorial on how to remove the motor out the bottom...
