I understand that with a hydralic roller that flat tappet methods don't neccessarily apply, but considering the amount of differing opinions I've seen on "breaking in a motor" I was just wondering if there was a safe in the middle of the road type break in that most would agree on. some people say let it idle for 5-10min while checking for leaks then give it hell, some say idle for 5-10 min then perform increased steps of rpm gradually until wot is acheived, some say baby it for awhile with very small loads then after xxx miles drive it like you stole it, etc.

just wondering what the common consensus is on a generally accepted way to break it in

Cam or new engine...I don't know anyone that recommends to let it idle. You always keep the revs up for 10 minutes or longer. You have to get the oil circulating and some friction going to seat the rings. Don't let it overheat. Baby it too much and you will end up with a smoker.

Lots of new engines are thrown right on a dyno and run wide open. If you do a Google search, you will hardly find any recommendations for a "soft" break-in. Most recommend you drive it as soon as you can.

from what I had seen the "soft" break-in doesn't come very recommended, I was simply posting it for the sake of making a point that many "procedures" exist that some people swear by. I was wondering if any form of break in would be a problem since the car is untuned for the new setup (ported heads, decent cam, 12:1 compression, etc)

this motor hasn't run very long (maybe a minute or two tops) at all, seems like I ran into a problem every time I fired it up lol. I'm not planning on firing it up again until I get a solid game plan.

I always hold your advice in a very high regard and on that note any more details on your personal recommendation outside of 1500-2000 for approx 10 min? such as what to do afterwards

I would try to get a base tune for it, so you don't wash down the cylinder walls with fuel.

I am no expert in engine break-in (not sure why no one else is giving their $.02, lol), though I can read things other people say, see their results and apply my own brand of common sense. There are always variations and opinions.

well I'd search but I'd find a bunch of people with differing opinions and if I make a new thread 9 out of 10 replies would be use the search feature lol

I think if I were to break in a new engine, I would run it soft for about 15 miles, then give it an oil change to get all the shavings from crap being "broke in", then I would run that **** like no other. Seems to be the best of both worlds.

that seems to be the common theme I've come across

pretty much 15-25 miles of regular driving then **** it!
