Lifter Guides

Ok so about a week ago i had some trouble getting my rockers to lock correctly and a few completely backed out on me to the point where the rockers and pushrod werent in place anymore. I fixed that and noticed i was still getting alot of knock retard.

So today i put some threadlocker in my rocker studs and when i was putting the pushrods back in the lifter guide was loose on the #5 cylinder. I could move it with the pushrod. I assume it came loose when the rocker wasnt on the pushrod, but i dont know.

Im assuming i have to pull the manifold and set them back under the spider, but could i have done any damage to the lifters or the block? I just rebuilt the top end of the motor, so it wont take long this time... just a headache.

THX,
Stu

Re: Lifter Guides

If the lifter(s) got turned, they would no longer be rolling on the cam lobe. It is possible that there might be some damage to either or both.

Re: Lifter Guides

well.... took the intake off and checked everything. As i suspected the spider got bent up quite a bit and the guide was completely loose. I bent the spider back in place and checked out the lifters. From what i could tell, the lifters looked in good shape.

I got a helpful hint from a local speed shop too. I was having trouble keeping the polylocks from backing out and he told me to take off the rocker studs and put them on a grinder and grind the tops completely flat. That will give the polylocks a clean place to lock on to.

Then i set the lash while the engine was running. By far the best way to do it IMO.

Now she screams up to 6800 rpm. Im still getting about 1-3* of Knock retard. Is that normal with comp-r lifters, RR, and no LT4 KM??? Most of the KR goes away once i hit WOT though.
