Until you cam them, then you have a 50% chance of getting <5,000 more miles before you spin a bearing

They are very dependable motors. Cop cars with them regularly are seeing 150K plus

Use to not be that way, it use to be extremley rare for some one to spin a bearing after a cam swap. The good majority how ever dont break

Re: life span of a lt1

160k so far and it just keeps getting faster, of course I keep adding speed parts.
I am currently working on a low mount alternator setup and installing a new manifold plumbed for direct port nitrous.
She may not last much longer after that.
I have alot of bolt ons, suspension, and a TH400 is going in soon but the LT1 is completely stock internally and I have bounced it off the 6250 rev limit too many times to count.
Thats the main reason I have not built a monster motor........the stock one just won,t die.

RayRay21 : No, not yet. It just seems like everyone that starts a thread about how their putting a cam in next week, gets on here 2 months later saying that they have no oil pressure at idle and theres this strang ticking noise from the bottom end ...

I really dont think its so much that they are notorious for spinning a bearing, its probably more that half the poeple camming these cars have 100K+ miles, and they were sloppy with the install or something.

I think this is true. The cam has to be in there perfect. Any misalignment can destory stuff quick. Do it right and you won't have any trouble, (I would expect a little extra wear due to more hp and you will be driving it harder) but other than that, should be fine.

Re: life span of a lt1

I have no idea... Everybody was shocked. If I didn't have bad luck I would have no luck at all... But it gave me an excuse to rebuild her so it was ok.

450+ hp and a 300 shot! Were they looking for an excuse to rebuild the motor?
