Less then 3/8 tank = hard start???

I thought I had the hard start fixed with I replaced what looked like the stock 96 battery with a Red top. but I have found that once my fuel level gets below 3/8 it hard starts.
I'm afriad this means feul pump, but want to make sure befor I undertake something that big.

Also why only under that much fuel? not enough power to pull the feul from that low???

hard start as in you are cranking for awhile? i know on my diesel truck when i get a low tank it does that too. i have a small air/fuel leak in some of the injector lines, so when i shut the car off it pulls air into the fuel filter, making it start and die. but when i have full tanks and on a slight downhill angle, the pressure in the line is positive, so no air sucks in. u can try looking for leaks or seeing if parking at an angle helps at all.

The gas gauges on these cars are notoriously off. Trying priming the fuel pump by turning the key to the on postion to see if that helps.

yes it cranks exceisivly, I let it prime for the 5 seconds or whatever it is that I can hear it.
I know the guage can be off, but I have been know to run it right to if not past the line without running out of fuel in dire time waiting for my pay check.
