Length of pipe after muffler

How does the length of pipe after the muffler affect the sound? I know there is a difference in sound between a muffler that has no pipe attached and one with long tail-pipes. I have heard that mufflers that don't have tailpipes/short tailpipes will have a more bass tone to them. Is that true??
Thanks,
Brady

most definitely...I had a Dynomax ultra-flo muffler with no tailpipes on my car for a few days and it would rattle the interior a lot...put some tailpipes on it and it was a much more refined and somewhat quieter tone (lot less bass), and didn't rattle anything
