Most cops might not care....but if you catch one in a bad mood, you could be in for a world of trouble.
Damn that sucks. I hope I don't get any of that crap, I haven't yet. I don't see how he could tell though, muffler would be in the way?

the power loss you would see with a highflow cat you won't even notice. These new ones flow very well. As stated if a cop finds it he may bust you. I know a year or so ago they were stopping cars that were hanging out and parked, and checking for cats, upon which they found many who didn't. THis was in California, and they fined those guys. There are better ways of gaing horspower, such as a cutout, then you have best of both worlds, plus you'll be helping the environment, the price for high flow cats is so cheap, I can't see why people cut them out.

In Illinois, cars 96 and newer, the inspection consists of them making sure you have a gas cap and then they check to make sure your computer isn't throwing any emisions codes. No sniffer anymore unless you throw a code.

Look on eBay, a store there called "performancepeddler" is selling CarSound (MagnaFlow) high-flow cats for anywhere between $30-$40 depending your exact needs. I bought two 3" high-flow CarSound cats from that eBay store for $31.50 each and they were delivered in 3 days! Extremely sweet considering the local MagnaFlow dealer wanted $175 a piece for the same exact item.

I think the $63 and 6hp loss is well worth the improved sound, smell, and piece of mind.
Thanks for the tip man. I just checked eBay and you can get them cheap there.

I'm in NJ, and I gutted my cat. I don't know what I'm going to do for inspection in August, but I'll figure it out by then. Like I said, mine's gutted, so I'll pass a visual. As far as roadside things, haven't hit one yet, but since mine's there, I can probably just argue that it's bad, and replace it.

I have never heard of cops checking to see if you had cats or not. My 79 k5 use to run true dual exhaust with no cats and in order to smog we simply committed "smog fraud." My uncle's brother owned a shop and would just give us passing certificates (this was before they uploaded them online I believe.) After they stopped giving us fake certificates, we had to have the exhaust replaced, so we went with 3 inch piping and a flowmaster. Sounded better than the dual exhaust by far. Maybe because the dual exhaust wasn't that great, but whatever. I've only heard a few stories of people being pulled over for their exhaust being too loud, one instance was my friends 325i that had a Scorpion exhaust on it (very loud, just at or underneath the state mandated dB limit), and another's 72 suburban that was driving to have his 20s installed when he went over a railroad track that snagged his muffler and ripped his exhaust from the headers, so he was pulled over for running open headers. As loud as his truck was with his cherry bombs, I could only imagine how it sounded with open headers.

Just gutt and sleve the converter.. That way it will not sound hollow if someone taps on it..No way for a cop to know if it is gutted with a visual inspection.

When I took my Formula to Deptford they spent a good long time looking under my car with the mirrors. I asked them what was going on and they told me they were verifying my cat (I have a hi flow and they told me I have to have at least 50,000 miles by federal law to replace a stock cat, I have 54,000).
So in answer to your question NJ does check for cats.
They also pull roadside inspections in the local area with a mobile emissions truck. You'll see these on Route 41 in Deptford and Berlin Crosskeys Road.
Jersey is very strict and serious about emissions. Just get a hi flow cat.
Agreed. I dont even think at any point i was on the fence of with running cats or no cats, now its not even a possibility in my mind now. I always knew about how NJ approches car inspections, but I was just interested to know the specifics about the punishment; it is pretty interesting.

Hey yea, i never noticed that, we are only a few miles away from eachother, thats pretty cool. Maybe I'll see ya at atco some time, haha maybe i already did.
