leaky flange????
leaky flange????
I have a '96 Z28 and I put on a set of BBK shortys. The passenger side went on great because the kit came with a ball joint to install... like I said, works great. But, the drivers side has that funky shaped flange to connect to the stock pipe and I keep blowing out the gasket. I've tried four times to replace it but I keep getting the same thing. Any suggestions????
Thanks,
Jason

I am not familiar with how the BBK is on the drivers side. I have SLP 1 3/4 shorties for a dual cat car. I went with a Random Technology dual cat Y-pipe that mounts up to the stock exhaust and hooks up to my SLP's. I haven't had any leaks from that side since. My car is a 95 but its a California car so its Dual Cat.
I think the heat from the Cat right at the Header is no good. You also might wanna check your header flange to make sure it's level (the flange surface). I grinded my flanges to hopefully avoid having issues but the drivers side kept leaking till I got the Random Tech Y-Pipe
I don't know if the Y-pipe will work with the BBK's though. If not try moving the cat.
Hope some of that helps you

What kind of gaskets are you using? If you're using some cheap paper ones that may be part of the problem. As stated above, you may also want to make sure the header flange is flat. Even if it's warped just a little, it's going to keep blowing gaskets.
I've been using felpro gaskets with a metal screen inside. I've been looking on line for some aluminum or copper gaskets but I can't find any that will fit that specific flange. The BBK header bolts right up to the stock flange. On the '96 its kinda triangular and kind of squared off on two of the corners. I haven't tried checking to see if the surface is level or not. I guess that's my next step.
Thanks,
Jason
