le3 head install now lacking power.

Well the title says it all. I had a tune from PCMforLess for all my current mods and stock home ported heads. The car seems like a dog in the low and mid range. I haven't had a chance to unwind it in one gear but it is definitely not as strong as it was before. Is it the tune or are the heads gonna rob me of low end and give me top end? I'm gonna wail on it tomorrow and see what it has up top but any insight would be great.

If I'm not mistaken the le3 is an all out race port so it will perform great up top but you won't have the port velocity down low. I suspect though you may be having alternate issues. It shouldn't rob you that bad.

Either bring it to the track or have it dyno'd to see the hp and tq graph.

I have an oil leak I need to track down. I'm guessing it just feels like a pig down low and will eat in the high R's say 5k and up. I didn't get a chance too really wail on it because it was after dark and there's more deer around here then people

Re: le3 head install now lacking power.

I just feel like it made more power down low with the stock heads with a hack job port job lol. I wouldn't think the tune would be off that much. I have 4.10 gears and a 3000 stall as well so it'd have to be pretty gut less to not sh** and get in the bottom end. I'm gonna play with it tomorrow and see what happens. Hopefully I can get it figured out because taking one step forward resulted in two steps back and that's unacceptable. I'm gonna make sure the plug wires didn't get mixed up but I think that would be pretty noticeable.

Wait, what cam do you have with these "LE3" heads?

Not surprised you've lost a bit of low-end with those heads. Since you have yet to wind it out I wouldn't be overly concerned just yet.

That's a puny camshaft for a set of heads like that.

I think this is your problem. I have pretty much the same heads as you and my cam is a bit more aggressive .595/.595 232/240 110 LSA and I have decent power low down and then screams once past 3500 to 6500.

Edit: Also, did you have stock heads and this cam before the head change?

I was under the impression that the LE3 heads are for bigger displaced engines..ie 383,396..bigger heads dont always mean more better performance.I have LE2 Dart Pro1s on my 383 and I think my motor would do better with a Le3 head..lol

Yea the camshaft was installed with the stock heads before. The car definitely had more low end and mid range grunt with the stock ones. I'm going out in the car in a few minutes to see what's really going on with it. I may even data log it to see if that'll tell me anything

Re: le3 head install now lacking power.

She's running strong now. My buddy went for a ride with me and thought I was spraying the car but it was motor only lol. My header melted the oil pressure gauge and that's where my oil leak came from. Overall I'm very happy with the performance gain. It pulls hard to 6800 and lights my bias ply e.t streets up all the way through 1st and 2nd. Only time it ever broke loose in 2nd was when i sprayed it on the track so there's definitely more power at hand.

YouTube - 93 camaro built lt1

There's a short video clip it seems to be running well. She's dirty but that's because driveway is a mud pit. I love the sound of my gmmg/cat back.

It sounds great! I'd like to see what it does on a dyno. What's your exhaust?
