LE3 guys inside - shifting and tuning questions
Hey guys,
I'm looking into getting the LE3 package soon. I was wondering what RPM you guys are shifting at. Also, are any of you guys running mail order tunes? I don't know of anyone in my area who can do a decent dynotune. Anyone have an LE3 dyno sheet?
Thanks in advance

Re: LE3 guys inside - shifting and tuning questions
you decide what rpm you want to shift at.
I told lloyd I wanted to make peak power at 6500 rpm, which is pretty high for a 383 i guess. it just about hits the mark peaking at about 6200 rpm. it only dropped 20 rwhp to 7000 rpm. I dont know what my peak torque is because my dyno run started at 5000 rpm. my numbers arent worth mentioning cause the car has so many problems.
I have a mail order tune from madz28. he did a great job at making it driveable and the A/F seemed to be good across the board. somewhere between 12-12.5:1. I told him I wanted 6500 rpm shift points and a 7000 rpm rev limiter. If I want higher I'll hold it in gear.
will you be on the stock bottom end? an LE3 on a 350 will be a pretty radical setup. my torque converter makes it very driveable although mine is a 383.

On a 355 6800rpm is where you want to shift.

Last time we talked he dynoed just under 400rwhp and then made some adjustments. He's been tweaking on the tuning and it's a good idea to either get really good at tuning or have someone knowledgeable do it for you.
If you are going to do this on a stock bottom end it's not a good idea, a LE2 setup would be better for you then.

Re: LE3 guys inside - shifting and tuning questions
We can make it peak anywhere from 6400 to 6800 RPM in a 355. It is more about matching the TQ curve of the cam to the gear, stall, weight and shift RPM.
The peak #'s on a 383 are gonna happen at 6100-6200 RPM due to the LT1 castings size. We can make it rev and pull past this butthe RPM that peak power is made will be dictated by cross section of the pushrod pinch.
Thesed heads are pretty bad *** for some LT1 castings since most ported LT1 heads on a 383 will make peak power 5800-6000 RPM.

Re: LE3 guys inside - shifting and tuning questions
Ive run a couple of Llyods set ups...
1st was the lowest cost heads I could find that were collecting dust on his shelf for over a year... These basic LE1 heads with my xe230/236 made my car haul ***... I was blown away. 255 cfm at .550 lift. Yeah on paper they looked so so but holy sh*t did the car run hard.
So I blew the engine due to poor tuning.
So a friend offered to port my heads and he did what appeared to be a good job. they flowed 280cfm or so at .550 lift. Car ran pretty freaking slow and put down 349rwhp with a poor powerband. Now the short block wasnt put together right and eventually spun a bearing but that has little to do with the power being made.
So seeing the error of my ways I call back llyod and tell him that I need another set of heads.. So he sends me his LE2 heads with decent 3angle valves.. Get the car running again and yes it is faster than before.. fairly noticable but still not as fast as the very first set of 500 dollar heads shelf dust collecting heads. Now this is probably due to the fact that it was during the summer when i put the LE2 heads on and the LE1's were in the winter and also the XE230/236 doesnt match the LE2's as well as the LE1's.
So now i spin another freaking bearing due to the same dumb machine shop...
So now... I give llyod a call and express to him that I need his matching cam and ask him why he didnt slap some sense into me and force me to by his LE2. I guess it was something about customer service and doing whatever the customer wants..
anyways so this time the short block is being built by someone else and I'll have a matching heads/cam set...
Point being.... Listen to llyod... do what he recommends... dont spend thousands experimenting like me... just do what the guy tells u and your car will haul ***.
