LE1 or LE2 heads, 1.6rr or 1.7rr. Help I'm lost.

I'm at a point where I'm getting ready to purchase heads, valve springs, and roller rockers. As my car sits I feel like high, high 12's are possible, but have only pulled 13.27@112, 2.38 sixty foot on street tires. I have untouched heads so I'm looking to change that(then I'll buy et streets). The setup I've been looking into is either the lloyd elliott LE1 heads or LE2s. Next I want new rockers, either Crane gold 1.6s, or these Scorpion 1.7s to get more lift out of my HotCam. I have no idea which valvesprings to with. Any suggestions on a head setup would be very helpful as I am not good at matching flow numbers and such. The vehicle is a weekend car so I want the baddest bang for the buck setup I can get staying under $2000.00. btw I will be installing these myself so that budget is for parts cost. thanx Nick

Just a few thoughts...

1) If you had a stock cam that you were trying to "crutch up" instead of changing, then a 1.7 ratio would be one way to go. I'm considering it myself as an interim step before I do a rebuild. However, you already have an aftermarket cam, and I question the value of distorting the profile by getting TOO far away from the 1.5 rockers it would have run with in the first place.

2) The best person to seek advice from on a specific combination is Lloyd. Or for that matter, any of the head vendors/porters on the board with a good rep.

3) Consider having your existing heads ported by one of those guys. I personally will be sending a set of Trick Flows to Lloyd for my upcomiong project, but again... there are multiple options in vendors.

4) In my opinion, a good basic combo is:
  • Undercut valve stems.
  • Pro Magnum rockers.
  • Beehive valvesprings.

5) Finally, if you want the most bang for the buck, then get a custom grind cam to go with your custom ported heads. A matched set works best.

I'm working with a customer now on his 1.7:1 cam setup... they are very hard to setup and I don't know if we can get this thing to work well over 6000rpm without some tweaking. A LS1 is one thing but a LT1 is a different motor.

Stick with the ProMag 1.6's, the LE cams are designed for them.

112 trap isn't bad at all. You can easily go mid 12s on a 112 trap with a decent launch.

Anyways, I'd go LE2 with 1.6 Pro Mags.

Bret,

What kind of issues are you running into with the 1.7:1 rocker setup?

Thomas.

This is an interesting discussion, I'm running the Hot Cam Kit and looking at doing heads very soon. Because I don't have the money right now I am hesitant to call AI or LE because I don't want to waste their time -- which they make it sounds very valuable on their websites as far as simple questions via email and telephone.

We're still working on my 1.7/1.6 setup. I put the 1.7's on the intake side, and so far so good with geometry issues at 7000rpm.

Mostly it's just pushrods and deflection issues... making it stiff enough to work.

I think it be better to run a bigger cam with 1.5 rockers then a smaller cam with 1.7 rockers.

Why do you think that?

13.27@112, 2.38 sixty foot on street tires.
Get some slicks on that car and you could drop an entire SECOND of ET!

No it's just that more rocker ratio stresses the parts more since it mulitplies the loads more.
