Large heads on stock block

I don't have to worry about emission now and the hot cam isn't enough. I have ported heads with flow numbers but still want more. I have been told my heads are pretty good, but i'm thinking of getting heads that would support a 383 in the future.

My question is would heads that would supoort 383 like AFR 210 or fully ported LT4 heads, work well with stock shortblock and large cam? Would it be an over kill for shortblock?

My other option would be to get a cam (GM847) only and wait till rebuild to purchase larger heads and cam package.

A bigger cam is going to help with the power, but really good heads are going to also.

AFR's and LT4's can work really well on a stock bottom if they are ported for it. LT4's would be my choice since the chambers are smaller and you can still get some good compression where the AFR's are 58cc at the smallest and still need to be milled.

Then again a set of really well done LT1's can do very well also. With new spring seats and 2.055 valves they can flow some air. There are some limitations on the stock castings and a LT4 would work better. The only bad thing about the LT4's is that they are going to be rather large on a 350 when fully ported. Then again if they flow they will be fine even if they are large. I've run some 215cc+ heads on 355-365cube motors and they are fine.

Heads that are right for a 350 are not going to be right for a 383, you can be close but not optimum.

What did you mean on overkill for the stock shortblock? Too much HP?

well i didn't know how drivablitly would be on a set of LT4 with upwords of 210cc and flow numbers near 280.

I only speak of these numbers cause, i know for a hot 383 flow much be near 280 or better with 200+cc runners.

I'm just think of the future and wanted to see if a set of head that would be great for a 383, how would they performe on a 350. I heard low end power would be lost do to large air, but i have 4:33 rear gears and think that would help make up the power loss, but.......

I have no idea what my ported heads volume is only the flow # and at .525 (hotcam springs) they stop around 260 and the .200-400 lift is really good, atleast LLyoid and Phil tell me, but the max flow isn't large enought to support a 383, so i thinking could i get away with a set of heads that are truly meant for the future, but want to use then now. I don't want to spend money on a piece i cannot use later down the road.
