You don,t need a lift or a scan tool to change an opti.
If its the cap and rotor going bad you won,t throw a code anyway.
I verified it was my opti by changing out everything else, not the best way to do it but all the parts had 125k on them and they needed replaced anyway.
If your sure its the opti you can install it yourself with a minimal set of tools, I did not even jack up the car to change mine out.
I don,t have AC or AIR so it wasn,t bad at all.

All Data times to replace the opti is 3.2 hours for replacement and .3-.5 hours for diag. The Chevy store I'm a mechanic for charges 85 dollars an hour. So you can do the math. All Data time is what you're looking at paying if the car is not covered by warranty.
serisouly it doesnt take that long..ive done min elike 4-5 times...all you have to do is, take off CAI, drain coolant, drop out the fans, take off waterpump, take off airpump, take off water pumpo bracket which is on driver side, losen the power steerign pulley, so you can get to the passenger side bolts on the waterpump, get a harmanic balancer pulley puller, to remove the balancer, unbolt the opti, tape and number your plugs, unless you have a repair manual, take off opti, replace it with new one, be sure to line the pin up, then reverse order...i promise you it really isnt that hard...a 12 year old could prob do this...
if ya want, i can really step by step it with ya if you wanna give me a call...

Yeah don't waste the time and money on a scan like I did. I found out nothing was wrong with my car (so the mechanic said) by doing the scan even though it stumbled it's *** off and mis fired, etc! I bought my car with a bad opti pretty sure that was the problem. Lucky guess. Runs awesome with a pretty smooth idle. The only thing I want to add is a better ig coil. Save the money and replace the plugs, wires, water pump and everything else that gets in the way so you probably won't have to worry about all that stuff later.
Hi.
I just got Opti-Devirginized last night! I say do it yourself... why let someone else have all the fun?!
Seriously, it wasn't that hard. I'm sure I could do it way faster next time, now that I know the procedure.
Good Luck.

It's not hard to do... I did the swap using this guide, which was dead on. Just make sure you have all the tools needed and plenty of light. You should be able to do it in 4-5 hours if this is your first time.
