knocking sound from the tranny area(loud)!!!

I took my car to the track to day and and found it making a loud knocking sound from the tranny area like something hitting the floor!! when I launched and also when it shifted gears(A4) basically whenever there seemed to be a transfer of torque or power, this happened ealier during the weekand thought right away that the torque arm bushing was shot and it was so I swapped it for a poly bushing, and havent pushed the car since until today at the track when the noise started again!! is it the tranny mount? any Ideas?

Thanks!

I thought my knocking sound was coming from the tranny area until I went to the front of the car...and it ended up being a spun bearing Hope it's just a mount or something!

Don't worry... its just your tranny mount. The rubber gets old and tears apart. You can get at about any local auto store... chevy has been using the same one for 40 years so even places like Autozone/Pep boys might have one.

I snapped the housing off my starter and it fell down inside the plate that surrounds the TC. It knocked and rattle until i took off the plate and took the piece out. It still started though, but i knew what i did. Prolly not ur problem, but another possibility.

Make sure your exhaust is not to close to the underside of the car. Exhausts have been know to hit the bottom of the car under throttle. Mostly happens to guys with FLP longtube headers but it wouldn't hurt to check anyway.

It's probably the tranny mount as mentioned.

I think I am the only loser that had a mysterious scraping noise from under my car. Turns out it was my torque converter scrapping the top of the tranny and the scatter shield. I am so cursed . Have a vigilante 2800 going in monday!

Knocking sound

Replace your transmission mount first before you do anything else. I've had the same problem 3 times!! Nothing too hard about the swap. Only takes about 30-45 min.

tranny mounts on these cars are POS. My old 89 Firebird v6 went through 5 of them with its 2.8 liters of fury, my old z28 2, my SS is still on the stocker, but I havent raced it yet.

Thanks alot guy's! I am pretty confident thatit is the tranny mount also, I'll jack it up and swap it today if I can find a prothane or enegy mount on short notice because I don't want to waste time and$$ on crappy stock tranny mounts..

Thanks for the Ideas.
