Knocking Noise
Well I had a missing in my car so I changed the spark plugs. What was a ticking noise is now a knocking noise that speeds up with the engine. I am sure this is not a good sign does anyone know what it could be? Help
Re: Knocking Noise
How are your plug wires? If they are not metal conductor (and most aren't due to the RF noise issue) they are most likely deteriorated internally. Moving them around to change the plugs may have made it worse. The carbon conductor turns to dust and the remaining conductor arcs to the plug terminal. That's what causes the ticking noise. My coil wire was doing this when I bought the car. I couldn't tell from looking at the wire itself. It was arcing inside the insulation. When i pulled on it, it broke and the dust fell out. It had decayed a good 1/2" or so up in the wire end. Car would run okay but was getting hard to start.
Re: Knocking Noise
Yup, definitely check your wires...especially if they are original, or have been replaced and rerouted other than the factory locations. A loose plug could cause a similar sound as well, but since you had the ticking before, I doubt that's it. Also check the header/exhaust manifold bolts/gaskets for leaks.
Since it appeared to get worse after you did the plugs, I'd be even more suspicious of the wires since they often fail shortly after being disturbed. They're sensitive to routing and tugging on the boots.
