Knock sensor install

Recently I've installed a new knock sensor. Not knowing the torques specs I installed it to what I felt was reasonably tight. After scanning the results, I noticed even more timing retard. I've since loosened the sensor tightened it hand tight, then gave it one full turn with a wrench. Spoke with a GM tech today who advised 16 inch pounds.

Can anyone give me an example of how much force16 inch pounds would be? No torque wrench and I don't think I could get one into place without removing Y-pipe and starter.

Even after loosening the sensor, it's pulling more timing than the old. Are these sensor's fragile enough to damage with excessive torque?

Thanks.

SHouldnt matter that much, just get it tight, makes usre to put some sealant on it. 16 inch lbs is like nothing you need to put it tighter than that

on the thought of your new one pulling more out, maybe the old one was lacking in pulling it out, and the new one is just doing what the old was supposed to do

Yes, as already mentioned, 16 is not very tight at all. I think you should just leave it like you told me you installed it the second time.

As for the new knock sensor pulling even more knock retard, it happened to me as well. The old knock sensor had all sorts of buildup on it and it was pretty rusty too, so that probably also contributed some to its desensitizing. It's just a microphone after all.

Thanks to both of you.

Ion,

I've sent you an e-mail to update my programming changes. The only change different to what we talked about last night was I've decided to go with your regular fan turn-ons for a 160 degree thermostat. No reason to set it higher when I'll only use the 180 degree thermo during the two coldest winter months.
