Killed my tranny this weekend. 3rd & 4th gone
Driving to Wichita to spend time with the family this Easter weekend my tranny finally gave up the ghost. As I was getting into Wichita after a 3 hour drive on the highway the motor just started revving like it was in neutral. I took mo foot off the gas and tried it again. Same thing. As I coasted I kicked it down into third and got the same thing. I slowed it down and kicked it into second and finally got a gear. So I've got 1st and 2nd, but 3rd and 4th went out at exactly the same time. Seems a little weird to me. It's been slipping in 3rd and 4th for a while, but it's surprising that it would just go out like this without warning.
Any ideas what might have caused this? A friend is going to build it up for me for about a grand, but I'd still like to know what the cause is.

Not surprizing, crappy trans! haha.. I rebuilt one for a friend that burned up the 3 and 4 clutches.. I mean they were a dark black in color. But it's not uncommon for this type of trans to do this I've heard of a bunch more that did it also. I recommend getting the 9 clutch pack (i think it's 9, whatever the upgrade is), it should help out a little more and keep them from burning up

In a 4L60E/4L60/TH700R4, 3rd and 4th require application (succesful type) of the 3-4 clutch pack so it actually makes quite a bit of sense that they went at the same time... Especially if it was slipping before this happened....
Then take a look at how inexplicably small the 3-4 clutch pack is considering the power put in front of the box... And then consider a modified engine making even more power than what GM had in mind when they gave the 4L60E the nod for this application.....
Makes even more sense

For those of you with useful information to contribute, thank you. It makes perfect sense now as to why they went at the same time. I was guessing the clutches were nearly gone, but I wasn't aware that 3rd and 4th used the same clutch pack.
Thanks!

Hey chris, mine and Katies (z28princes's) both did that. When we both blew them up, both of our trannies lost 3rd and 4th. I meant to blow mine up, but hers just went out on the highway too. We had jsut come back from kcir, but did no racing. I hate those damn autos, thats why I have the 6 speed now.

My buddy with the '03 Cobra knows a guy that will build it to handle 600 ft/lbs for about a grand as a "friend" favor. He's currently building the Turbo 400 to live behind Tony's blue 10 second Supra, so I think he can build it right.
I can find out if he'll do her tranny for the same price.Unfortunately I'm spending my repaint money on the tranny, but at least I get to throw the 3000 Vigi in and try to go 11s on the 315s this summer.

Chris. Thanks for the offer, but hers went out about a year ago. We had it rebuilf damn good, for a pretty good price. I am not allowed to say the price, because my buddys dont want that getting out. And tony;s supra is more green
. Thanks for the offer again, I am sure she would of appreciated that. Good luck on the car, and we are going to need to line them up this summer. I would of loved to of taken the hot cam vs. 305 up, but unfournately I have to build a 396 now.

Not to nitpick, but Tony's car is dark blue. My buddy Kelly bought it from Texas (at the time it was the quickest NA-T car in the country) and traded it to him for the stock black '93 that he had. That is, if we're talking about the same Tony and he hasn't painted the car in the past couple of weeks since I saw it last.

Well to me it looked green, and thats what matt told me it was. I really dont know, I have not seen it in about a month. And yes I knew it was kellys, I saw it back when he brought it here. But I was just giving you shi+.
Oh ya, I had to broken compression rings. Compression was way down, so I deceided to rip it apart.
