i received an estimate from an auto shop for $225 for new waterpump and install.
when i showed up to pick up the car i was charged $350.
My question is accordind to the repair manual how long does it take to install a waterpump.

doesnt really seem to me like you got screwed!! dealer price for a water pump is like $260 according to gmpartsdirect.com. depending on the hourly rate looks like they charge you for the parts and about 1.5-2 hours worth of work!
now if you bought the water pump youself and did the job yourself it would been a lot less!! you can buy a water pump at a parts place for around $140. thats what happens when you have shops do the work for you! but they shouldnt have set an estimate of $225 then charged $350. find out how much they charged you for the waterpump... then you will be able to see how much they charged for labor!

I thought once an auto shop gave you an estimate, they couldn't charge you more, without your authorization?
What was their justification?
Freakin' thieves! Report them to the BBB and the BAR!!!

Dang, 1:15 for a waterpump! Thats pretty quick. I just did mine and it took me 7 hrs
Haha, well it was my first time doing anything major on the car, and I had no manual, and limited tools. But still, 1:15 total time is smokin!

I THINK YOU GOT A SMOKEN DEAL ON THAT JOB. THINK OF IT THIS WAY, THE SHOP CHARGES YOU $80-$90.00 AN HOUR FOR A REPAIR, THE MECHANIC LOOKS LIKE HE CHARGED YOU 1 HOUR TO DO THE JOB, THAT IS A DEAL TO ME. YOU HAD TO BUY THE WATERPUMP, COOLANT, COOL DOWN TIME BEFORE REPAIR, MAYBE CLAMPS AND SILICONE. THEN THE MECHANICS DIAG TIME PLUS THE TIME HE PUT INTO YOUR WATERPUMP REPAIR THEN BLEEDING SYSTEM(CAREFULL OF OPTI!). THE MECHANIC PROBABLY MAKES BETWEEN $15-$20.00 AN HOUR, WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO THAT JOB FOR $20.00???? THE DAMN SHOP MAKES ALL THE MONEY NOT THE MECHANIC..IN MY HONEST OPINION I THINK THEY UNDERCHARGED YOU AND YOU GOT A GOOD DEAL.
IF THE GUY DID A GOOD JOB MAYBE YOU CAN HAVE OTHER REPAIRS DONE CHEAPER BY HIM IF YOU PAY HIM UNDER THE TABLE.....AND BUY YOUR OWN PARTS.
