just bought a car, losing power! help!
just bought a car, losing power! help!
i just bought a 1994 z28 6-speed convertable with 67,000 on it. it seemed fine at the lot, got it up to about 3500-4000 rpm and it pulled real strong. felt great.
tried it out on the roads at home and it loses power at about 4500rpm. it doesn't slow down, it just stops pulling, and i can't really get it to rev any higher.
in the short time i've driven it, it seems to do this in all gears. i don't have a clue. was someone jacking with the rev limiter? can you do that? it revs fine in neutral.
also, if i'm in, say, fourth at 3000rpm and i floor it, it seems to bog or miss.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you check a few things if you haven't already. Air filter, pull the intake off and see how clean the MAF is. Find a plug that's easy to get too and pull it to see what it looks like. Change the fuel filter and have a look at the old one to see what's inside. Start simple then go from there.

do you happen to have an msd box on there?
change the oil anyway, get a good lube/filter in there
take an alcohol dipped q-tip and clean the maf, be gentle
change fuel filter
run your hands along the plug wires feeling for cracks etc.
does the exhaust smell real gassy even after warm up?

Had the same problem, changed plugs and wires + Coil wire. Problem gone.
It came back after six months, Problem was IAT sensor. Just dissconnecting it fixed the problem, I put a new one and the car pulls great now.
Mine has 104K miles on it.

msd box or any other kind of supplemental ignition system is what i meant by that, most of these set-ups have external override rev limiters...they cut spark instead of fuel, which=safer....
i personally run Mobil 1 with a K&N filter, but i suggest to go with whatever combo youve had success with since theres many good quailty oils out there, just go with a trusted brand and you'll be fine...
If it's a real STRONG gas smell, it can be attributed to a non-firing cylinder, an ugly tune, injector malfunctions
If it's faint it can be an exhaust problem, like a leak or bad cat/s
