Just bought the car, can someone help me out with a few questions??

Hey i just bought a 94 camaro Z28, a couple hours after i took it home my friend, who had a camaro at one time, showed me that you could unbolt the rest of the exhaust from the cat via loosening those two bolts, and have the exhaust come str8 out the cat, its really loud, and it sounds mean as hell, my question is this.. does doing this affect the car in anyway, good, bad. let me know thanx.

It doesnt affect car at all...so by doing this you not going to cause any damages....But you will get a ticket for loud exhaust...
Sebastian
ps. You should gain about 10RWHP by doing that...

Theres an aftermarket part called a "cutout" that you can install right after the cat the will basically do this for you. You can buy a cheap one for $35 that you manually have to open, or get an electric cutout, that you can open/close at the flip of a switch.

is it true that you can lose alot of low-end torque if you completely take off the cat, and just how exactly does backpressure effect the way a car runs, sorry if these questions seem stupid, i just bought the car yesterday after i sold my 3000GT so im trying hard to get to know the whole new lingo on this forum.!!

Cat=very restrictive.
Backpressure=myth

Take the cat off! It will only help your performance and HP.

Cats aren't THAT restrictive... sure their not an open pipe, but most cats are fairly free flowing.

I'd put a cutout in after the cat

I say lose the cat if you dont have to worry about emissions ppl do a visual inspection, and after you get the car safty inspected

One less thing to break the way i would look at it

Partially true. Yes, cats are somewhat restrictive and will eat approximately 10HP and muffle the sound. However, backpressure is not a myth and you can loose some low end torque by having too free flowing of an exhaust. On my 92 Vette when I went to straight pipes instead of mufflers I gained about 10HP, but lost about 10lb/ft of TQ up to about 3000rpm. Considering how much TQ the LT1/4 engines have, I don't see this being a big issue. You are really just moving the power around some (taking it off the low end and moving it to the upper rpm range).

thanks, i actually just reconnected the pipes back, the noise was starting to get annoying, and the smell too, i put it back after someone told me i was risking burning the cat up.

I agree, get an ORP and take the cat off (if you dont have emissions) but then again i just swap my cat when its time to take the test.
