Junction Box smoking and melting plastic?

I was letting my car idle for a while while I was recharging my A/C system, when I notice that my Stinger junction box was smoking really bad. I pulled on it a little bit and the housing just came apart in my hand. Most of the plastic was melted, and the actual conductor portion was very hot. I replaced the stock red junction with this one when I first got the car about 4 years ago and this is the first problem I have had with it. I have also noticed that my voltage is only around 11 volts these days. Is is possible it is grounded out somewhere or does the box just need to be replaced or what? Any help would be apprecieated.

Sounds like a short somewhere off that junction box. Do you have fuses in this box or is it only for distribution? I'd figure it out quick because baaaaad things can happen when the electric gremlins move in

It is only for distribution. I replaced that little red plastic one that comes stock right next to the power steering reservoir. It does not have any fuses before the box or in it. It comes straight off the battery. I hear you about the bad things happening. I really want to figure this out. I kinda figured it was a short. Does anybody know the best way to track it down?

You've got a short somewhere in the car. Any chance you have amps hooked up to the junction? If so, I would start checking those wires first.

Good luck,
Thomas.
