Issues Installing oil pump drive using Melling pump

I am having one hell of a time trying to install my oil pump drive. the drive is about 1/2inch from going down all the way on to the pump shaft.. i am building a 383 using the melling HV pump.. the shaft that was ordered w/ the pump is melling part number IS-55E..everything looks good and i think i even test fit everything before i started building.. i do not have the pump part number handy..do i have the right shaft for a 1995 LT1?? when i turn the crank w/ a wrench the drive moves..so i figured the gear on the cam and the pump are where they are sopposed to be?? any ideas..

.....if my parts guy screwed up there will be hell to pay!!

The slot in the pump drive is not lining up with the bottom gear. Pull the drive up & rotate the gear to match the slot in the pump shaft. Due to the helical gears, you may have to turn it an additional tooth to so it rotates into position.

The part you ordered was this one...

Melling Oil Pump Driveshaft, 200-262 (3.3L-4.3L) V6, 262-409 V8

You ordered the incorrect one.

Run down to the parts store and order a pump drive shaft with the steel pinned collar for a 90s SBC, Its about 10 dollars and works perfectly.

Did you use different main studs? If so you prolly have the washer on the main stud stopping it

Nothing wrong with the IS-55E. Been running one in my LT1 for the past 9 months. What's incorrect about it?

That's what the IS-55E is.

Re: Issues Installing oil pump drive using Melling pump

I was able to fix the problem this evening...i had it on the drive shaft perfectly every time..i decided to get out my Ford wrench and and screw driver and give it a few light taps...sure enough it slide right on!!i think with the melling shaft and stock drive, the inside diameter of the drive is every so slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the shaft..a few taps and it went together nicly..it just really worried me when it did not slide on by its self or with a little bit of force pushing on it. I did use the shaft that has a metal collar. I did need to put washers on my windage tray to keep my crank/rods from hitting...as well as ding the oil pan w/ a hammer to keep the crank from hitting that.

...i have been reading alot about the melling HV pump..and that is what i am using..i'm just scared to death of sucking the pan dry...with just a few turns of the pump shaft with a screw driver oil was flowing very quickly..let alone what it would do at a few 1000 RPM

..whats your thoughts shoebox?

I assume you stroked your motor. Did you decide to go with the stock oil pan?
