How many have installed their longtubes in their own garage at home??? I have access to a lift but it seems that everytime I get a chance to do it something happens and I can't get it done. I would much rather do it at home in my garage and take my time on it instead of trying to squeeze it into one day. Also, this isn't a regular one car garage it is my shop which is about the size of a 3 1/2 car garage and I have 3 jacks and 6 jack stand and plenty of tools. Should I just do it at home???

Here, I like to follow Javier's writups. He give good detail, I used his Converter writeup to remove my tranny in my carport...

 

Sure, garage is wonderful. I did mine on my driveway on Rhino ramps. Really easy and straightforward, but lotsa time and lotsa pain....

 

Take your time to do it right, don't get in a rush and do it at home! Basically, that is what I did on my LT1 Kooks long-tubes. The LT1, F-Body header install is not an easy job, so if you need to take a break, you can.

Also, to slip the headers in from underneath the car, you'll need to get the car high on the jackstands to get the correct angle. Good luck!

 

I've done 4 sets (3 different cars) of headers at home with just ramps and jack stands. It's not a problem to get the car up high enough to put the longtubes in. I just finished putting in Pacesetters on my '95. I ended up bending the flange on the drivers side slightly while putting it in (the car was 1/2" too low) but I had an exhaust expander to bend it back.

 

Do it at home, ive installed a set of mac midlenghts, and put my pacesetters LT's in twice in my garage. Getting ready to put jet hots on my brothers ls1 in a few days. Its a piece of cake, just takes a little time.

 

IDK, if i had access to a lift i would jump all over it.

 

I did it on the driveway with a good floorjack and a pair of jack stands. A lift would have made the job 10X easier though.

 

sure u can do it in a garage i did mine in about 2 days , not counting the down time trying to figure out y my car would run right

also a lift will make ur life 300x better

 

i know a lift would make it easier but i dont want something to happen and then have the car be stuck at this place and ahve to leave it sitting outside. I would rather do it at home so that way if i want to stop and work on it the next day i can and i dont have anything to worry about.

 

I did it in my driveway in an afternoon-evening project. Took me about 6 hours. I did have my dad come out and hold the headers while I got the first bolt started on each side to hold them in place.

I put the car on jackstands, that were ON TOP of a 4 inch solid concrete block. The car was heigh enough that you could almost sit up straight underneath it withouth hitting your head. It was like maybe 20 inches higher than they usually sit. If not more. It was high. And it really isnt as bad as people make it seem.

 

i did mine in my garage by myself for the first time and i would do it again. i worked slow and worked on it for a few hours every night for 4 days. I would recomend doing it at your place so you can take your time and do it right especially if you have all the tools you need there.

 

I did my PaceSetter LT's in my garage, it took me about an hour and a half.

 

'94 Bad A Z28 ~ How the hell is it humanly possible to get the manifolds and everything off, and the headers in, in an hour and a half? Thats awesome though.

 

I did mine in my gravel driveway on ramps so yeah i'd say go for it in your garage.
