Installing electric water pump

Hey,
I'm new to this website but my hubby is on here all the time. I figured this would be a good place to get some help. He just got his electric water pump and I want to surprise him and install it. He has a 96 firebird formula. I am relatively mechanically inclined and it looks pretty simple. However, I'm supposed to file 4 grooves into the stock housing to fit the new water pump. There is what looks like to be a file next to the old water pump. I'm assuming I can use that. I guess my questions are should I use this file? If I've never done this before, what are the chances I will screw this up? and is there anything I should know before I attempt this? Thanks lots!

The only modification I had to do with the Meziere (well, not the water
pump itself) was to shave away some of the fan shroud.
