Smile Installed torque converter today, my thoughts and a ??

I bought a dacco 2200 stall converter not too long ago for $50. I couldn't pass it up!! Luckily there's a guy I know here that is a mechanic and he does a little side work. Anyways, we installed the converter today, mostly him though If you cut out all the time spent BSing or whatever, it took about 2.5 hours to do. Mechanics rock

We got the converter in, and put a new seal on the input shaft of the tranny while we were in there. The old one wasn't leaking, he just figured it would be a good idea.

After getting the car put back together I started it up, let it run and filled up the tranny fluid to the right level. I was ready for a test drive at this point. As soon as I put the car into gear while I was still stopped there was a faint sound like a noisy bearing or something. When I gave the car some gas it got louder, then when I hit about 5 mph the noise stopped. Other than that odd noise, the TC works perfectly. The revs come up nice and quick, and it locks up nicely just like the other one did. I was a little afraid to get on it too much until I know what the noise I'm hearing is.

At part throttle the car feels strong!! That's about all I could do since it was wet out today. If I'm going along at about 15-1600 rpm in a gear and go about 1/2 throttle the rpms will come up to about 3000.

Anyway, a very worthwhile mod, even a small converter like I have feels real good. Does anyone know what this noise I've been hearing is?? I don't want to drive the car too hard until I get it resolved......

A buddy of mine installed the same converter and had what seems to be the same noise. We run it hard and nothing broke. So we called one of our buddys that does all our tranny work and he said those converters are notorious for that. He told us what was going on but i can't remeber what he said exactly. So we pulled it out and put a different conver and had no noise. Everything seemed fine with the old converter just didn't like the noise.

Call a trans shop and ck tell them what is going on. Most of them will tell you some will act stupid and say "I will have to look at it" Don't believe them. Anyways that is my 2 cents. GOOD LUCK

Thanks man, I appreciate it!! Like I said, it feels perfect, except for that noise. Maybe I'll just deal with it

Well the roads finally dried up around here I just took the car out for a little testing. From about a 45-50 mph roll it pulls noticeably harder, actually it feels great!! I didn't know if it would help or hurt me from a roll, but now I know that it helps out. From a slow first gear roll, I nailed it and somehow got traction, and it pulled great!! I didn't try from a stop, it'll just boil my street tires. I'm impressed at what this small converter can do
