Install arp main studs, easy with block out assembled?

I currrently have my block sitting out of the car pretty much not assembled with everything else, but it does have the heads on and intake manifold.

would it be easy to install the 2 bolt main stud kit? what exactly do i need to do, is there an install guide somewhere?

or do i need to pretty much take the block apart to install the arp main stud kit?

thanks

you'll have to remove the main caps, with the engine upside down in order to switch it over to studs, some people do not recommend switching this without checking the oil clearance. I have never changed em and did a before/after test, prolly should call a local engine shop and ask them if its OK to change without checking clearances

well i can turn it upside down if needed, and the oil pan is clearanced for the 383 stroker setup i have, im just wondering if i can actually change the bolts to studs myself? or is it something that needs a lot of work and a lot of disassembly?

am i suppose to use all 16 bolts that come with the main stud kit? i think that is how many come with it.

yea its really easy to do, once the pan is off should take about 15 minutes, make sure you drain the engine of all fluids first and take the pan off with the engine right side up so nothing sitting in the pan goes into the block, and use all the bolts

They shouldn't change the clearances more than most guys can even measure. I've changed them out in a motor and had zero problems.... i've also checked main bearing clearances and didn't have a problem with them at all.

I wouldn't worry about clearances unless it is a very high milage motor.
the only tools you will need is a dead blow or soft hammer (if you actually remove the caps), toque wrench,(that will do around 100 ft-pounds) and deep sockets ( i believe its 11/16 )

I wouldn't even take the caps off.... I would just replace them one by one.

Also a good idea to run a bottom tap through the main bolt/stud threads. most blocks arent bottom tapped, and this will prevent any thread gauling when you install the studs

thanks for the info guys, the block is at a shop getting work done, that is the reason i can easily turn the motor upside down and remove the oil pan, i actually just swapped to a milodon oil pan a few days ago in a few min, so just wanted to see how easy it would be to change to studs for the main since i don't want to go bolts.

thanks

Some blocks don't seem to mind having studs installed, while others will mess up the main housing bore. Personally I have never installed them without an align-hone.

Why not just throw a line HONE thru there? Much more accurate and easier to do.

Two bolt mains, 16(bolts) studs. Doesn't compute? Or have I misread something?

i really have no idea man, i just remembering the guy on summit saying something like 10+ bolts with the arp stud kit i picked up.

thats why i was wondering how difficult it would be if i can turn the block over and get the oil pan off.
