I just got my hooker muffler in the mail. I decided to buy the muffler and let a shop run the pipes (save $$$). Now, they all tell me that 3" pipe can't be run in a camaro. The guy is going to run the pipes tomorrow, and more than likely will use 2 3/4" for the intermediate pipe, and 2.5" tailpipes. I think 2 3/4" is the stock pipe size? Will I see a performance gain from this? I also have a Qtec cutout coming in soon. Will it make up for any loss I might have by going to the smaller pipe.
Also, does anyone know if I can buy the intermediate pipe they sell with the hooker cat-back separately, possibly from the factory as a replacement type thing?
I would just go ahead and buy the cat-back, but then I would have this muffler laying around. I would send it back, but most likely would have to pay shipping, restocking, and all that other BS.

 

WTF? just about every aftermarket catback uses 3" pipe. if they can't do it go somewhere else. You can also use the stock piping.it is a 2 3/4 pipe, and will work untill you get a full catback. Do not let a shop tell you that they cant do 3". I know of a shop here in Phoenix that did a 4" exhaust in stock location.

 

I'd say WTF difference is 1/4"? I think they can and they don't want to or don't have the pipe or a way to bend it.

 

why can't they do 3in.I would find a new shop to do 3in.The whole catback would have been the way to go.2.75 is stock.There would be a gain with just the muffler.All they would have to do is weld in the new muffler.If you want a 3in cat back send the muffler back and get the catback.

 

I have Hooker LT's, mufflex 4" ypipe and hooker 3" catback. Everything fit just fine except we had to cut a little off of the intermediate pipe since the ypipe was longer that the stocker.

3" is not to big, some people run the Mufflex 4" catback system.

 

There should not be a difference in performance, but the shop should be ablr to run 3 inch pipes

 

What you guys have said is exactly what I thought. However, every shop in the surrounding counties either doesn't have the equipment, doesn't believe it can be done, or gives me some bs excuse ie: 3" pipe is overkill for my car. I've been told numerous times the exhaust would rattle if I put in 3" pipe (also bs). I think they either don't want to try it, or aren't good enough to do it.
In the case that I can't get 3", would the cutout (right behind the y-pipe) make up for the difference? I would buy the system, but as stated earlier I don't want to deal with shipping it back (at my expense more than likely), and restocking fees.
The guy that I'm having do it said he would put the biggest pipe in that he could fit. I guess I'll just have to convince him that 3" will fit, since I know for a fact it will. All in all, this whole situation has pissed me off.

 

One question. Are you trying to run true duals or just a single that splits with a y-pipe for a catback? I have heard that with true duals a 3" won't fit. I do know that if you use a y-pipe setup there will be absolutley no problem running a 3" setup. Fits good sounds good and no rattle or any other problems.

 

ok I have seen a custom 4" up over the axle fit. I have also built a 3" before at a shop I worked at. drive an extra hour or 2 to get it done, or just buy the catback.

 

Just running a catback from the y-pipe. Perhaps they thought I meant true duals though.

 

I have 3" true duels, and they "fit" under the car, but I do lose some ground clearance and have dumps before the rear axle. But I just changed my setup because I got to many tickets, and my neighbors were bitching. Went with stock 98 single tip exhaust and 2 qtec cutouts.
