I'm Tempted....
I'm Tempted....
I am really tempted to re-use old lifters I have.
The deal is I am changing springs, RR's timming chain, etc and was thinking about the hot cam, but i don't want to drop another 200 on just lifters. I know you should change lifters with the cam, but man i am tempted. Engine is at 125,000 miles.
What do you think? Should i just skip the cam? or just re-use the lifters?? A new engine will be comming in 2 years probably.

Re: I'm Tempted....
you should only have to change lifters w/ flat tappet type cams, roller lifters are infinitely reusable unless you know they have a problem. They will wear a little over time, don't get me wrong, but for the most part, I don't see a problem w/ re-using stock.
Re: I'm Tempted....
Search hasn't worked for me all morning. When does it become a "need" for better lifters?
I have been running stock ones with my 306. Probably putting a GM847 back in the rebuild. can I stick with my stock ones? (These have less than 50k on them)

Re: I'm Tempted....
If this is true then i am darn happy
I'm thinking i will re-use them after all.
My automotive teacher says that they should always be replaced---then again this is just to get me by for the time being.

Re: I'm Tempted....
just visually inspect them when you pull them, pay attention when you pull them out of the motor for any signs of bind, look for tarnish build up on the sides, any signs of wear, I usually check plunger actuation to see if I can notice any binding or difference from the others, then throw them in a bucket of mobil 1 5w-30 (organized so they go back in the same hole), then put everything back together if I don't notice any difference.
Re: I'm Tempted....
On a hyd roller the factory has as good as there is out there.
Look for cracks around the bottom of the body and roll the wheel(bearing) slowly on each one to see if there is any tight places. Try to wiggle the brg to see if it has any wear and check the bearing pin on each side and make sure it's not loose.
If everything looks good put them back in any hole and ya are good to go. The correct way is back in the hole they came from but over the years I have found no difference except in a flat tappet and ya are using the same cam otherwise ya replace cam and lifters together on a flat tappet.
