I'm stumped

Well.. finally got my car back together.. all the upgrades in my sig.. all started when I decided to get my heads reworked "the guides were wore slap out". Well I tossed back in my old 306, new lt4 ed chain, 95+ opti setup, and new true dual setup "that sounds bad a$$ btw". well got it fired up and idling.. now I know the 306 is a bumping cam but I thought it was missing still. well I thought maybe my valves were adjusted a bit too tight so I readusted them running with a 1/4 turn.. still running rough as hell.. so I just happened to pick and pull the #3 plug to see whats going on.. plug was dry?! whats up with this? I had the injectors stuck on my jeeps's 3.4 when I got that motor and I tapped them with a small hammer and that fixed them. didn't work with the Z's injectors.. I don't know whats going on with them.. any ideas? thanks for the help guys

Re: I'm stumped

Have you actually identified a cylinder that isn't firing or just looking at plugs. Remember when a cylinder fires, the plugs are dry. Why don't you use an infrared thermometer or the spray bottle trick to find the dead hole? Then check to see if it's dead from spark or from fuel.

I remember installing my cam and at first I thought it was missing. I checked everything. It turns out it wasn't missing, it was just loping at idle. The 306 cam is a lot more radical than mine.

Let it get cold, run it for 20 seconds, and cut it off. Then feel the header primaries. The cold ones are the ones that aren't firing, work from there.

What kind of bottle trick are you talking about?

By taking a spray bottle and spraying the header primaries w/ it.. Most will evaporate really fast.. and the one's that don't are not firing.. and are your dead cylinder's.. Really cheap yet effective troubleshooting tool!..

Re: I'm stumped

not only was the plug dry.. the insulator was as white as the day it came out of the box and it wasn't wet from fuel.. I'm pretty sure its been sparking though.. a close look at the electrode and it you could see carbon traces.. I can pull the injector clip "#3 for sure" and motor idle doesn't change. I put a long extension to my ear and as far as I can tell it is clicking just like the #1 injector.. only thing I did before I reinstalled the injectors is spray both sides with brake parts cleaner.. but I did this to everyone.. don't see how that could have messed any up.. think I will be forced to buy a new set? I had thought about sending these off to get cleaned but with my mods I'd prob be better off getting a new set in the 30 pound area..

Re: I'm stumped

update! number 3 and 5 cylinders are not getting fuel.. one hell of a hot spark though.. I've already checked to make sure I don't have those two plug wires crossed and I've beat on thos injectors.. so unless they are just froze solid I don't know whats going on.. I measured the resistance on them 12 ohms on both.. what else can I do besides replacing them?

Spray em out with carb cleaner. It isnt the greatest thing for them, but if they're not working, its worth a shot.

Re: I'm stumped

well I connected an extra clip I had and tapped it to 12v while the car was running.. it stumbled the engine so now I know the injector works.. from here it can only be a few things, bad clips, break in the wire, ar something wrong with the pcm.. but it worked fine before

Re: I'm stumped

how is this for a delima? I plug in a noid light to either of the two injectors and it doesn't start flashing right away.. takes anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds before it starts..

Re: I'm stumped

I would see about getting a fuel injector tester. Just pull off the fuel rail with the injectors attached and hook the injector tester to them one at a time. The injector runs off power from the battery and will fire the injector on command with the press of a buttom off the tester. It was really cool, it was how i found out mine were working alright. Peace, Dustin.

Re: I'm stumped

we're all human right? its easy for us to overlook the small things.. especially at 2 in the morning when you're about to fall asleep under the car.. after two hard days of searching for the "injector problem" I took out a plug again.. but this time I did smell fuel... and I tested the spark at the plug ends earlier and it was a very hot spark.. so put two and two together and you figure that the spark is not firing at the right time.. yeah.. you guessed it #3 and #5 plug wires were crossed fixed that problem very quickly.. and what do you know.. it runs perfect.. now that I've mad a lap around town all I have to say is WOW! this thing rungs soo strong and sounds bad a$$!! I couldn't leave anyone hanging that was following this thread so I lower my head and feel pretty stupid about what it actually was.. but I'm so glad to have it run again
