Its not that easy, 440 to the wheels is a lot, you have to decidewhat you want the motor to do and how much you are willing to spend. Your looking to spend about 2-400 on block work alone. After that, your going to need a rototating assembly, that will greatly depend on how much you want to spend, on average look to spend any were from 1300-2000K, many different combinations. Are you planning on building this motor your self? If not then the machine shop can built it for you, that will cost you a few hundred. Now on to the heads, 440 means good heads, esp n/a. This can cost any were from 1-1500K. Lets look at cam, the cam it self should be about 250, 275 for rockers, 200 or so for lifters, 130 for springs. Its a lot of money to get to were you want to go. So all said and done this motor will cost on average from 4-6K.

Your not done

You will need headers, y-pipe, cat back if you dont have one, this all in all can get up to about 5-800, depending if you buy stuff new or used.

Drivetrain

Clutch, you'll smoke the stocker, I dont know how much they cost but I know they are expensive.

Suspension

You will need about every bolt on you can get to get that thing to hook

Rear end

Esp with a six speed, 440 is going to kill your stock 10 bolt. 12 Bolts will cost near 1800-2000.

if i got a new rear i'd get the 9'' ford rear conversion or w/e, so would it be smarter just to get heads/cam on my stock motor? i dont know, i got 90k miles on it and if i got new heads/cam i'd want to change out pistons but that'd be hard w/o pulling the motor wouldnt it?

lemme try to break it down for you in terms of my upcoming rebuild. keep in mind the only things i'm replacing are the block and rotating assembly, all of this other stuff was on the car when it blew up. i'm only gonna list engine stuff...if i got into headers, exhaust, the rear end, gears and suspension stuff i might cause myself a big headache.

STUFF I NEED FOR REBUILD

LT1 4-bolt block (off of ebay)- $225
shipping for block- $85
machine work on block- ~$400~
6 inch rod 383 rotating assembly (rings/bearings/balancing included)- ~$1600~

STUFF I ALREADY HAVE

ported LT1 heads (including cost of bare heads, valves, valve job, port work, milling, springs/retainers/locks/seals, and assembly)- $1700
custom hyd. roller cam- $285
GMPP lifters- $220
hardened pushrods- $120
36# injectors- $250
comp pro mag 1.6 rockers- $280
granatelli MAF- $150
bbk 58 mm TB- $375
March pullies- $125
Elgin timing set- $65
LT4 knock module- $35
OBD 1 conversion/tuning- $350
SPEC stage 3 ceramic clutch- $450

as you can see, by the time i get done with the 4-bolt block 383 i will have spent ~$6700~ in engine parts and machine shop labor alone. it would be at least $1000 more if i didn't have the ability, with the help of friends and family, to help build the new engine. remember, that amount does not include headers, exhaust, gears, rear end or suspension stuff.
