ignition problem

when i drive in the rain...after about 4 or 5 miles my engine starts missing like crazy and wont hold a steady rpm even if im on the throtle a little. ok so i did some research and found out its common for the opti to go bad and it sounded like the problem. i bought a new gm/delco opti-spark replacement. istalled it. the car idled better but the next day it snowed and i was drivin to work on a slushy road and in the usual spot where it acted up b4...it did again. is there anything else it could be? coil? alternator? it has new plugs and wires and the msd coil i put on over the summer.

Re: ignition problem

try using a squirt bottle and spray the wires slowly, may have to power break engine to show up. if you have a bad wire it should show up unless you have a carbon track in wire or plug. if you spray at the sparkplug boot while having someone power brake the engine,if the opty gets water in it it will usually act up for a long time( in the morning too) a 94 and older probably wont dry out without taking apart. the 95 and newer has 2 vent hoses, do a search under opty spark 95 it will show you some pictures. hope this helps

Re: ignition problem

it only happens in the rain and by the time i get out of work it runs just fine...unless its raining of course then it takes a few miles and its gay again. iv had the car over a year and it just recently started doin this. maybe 2 months ago or less. thers gotta be someone else out there with this problem...ill triple check my wires for arc marks.

Re: ignition problem

Sounds like spark plug wires arcing (maybe against your long tubes?)

As previously stated, try the water spray bottle trick, and do it at night in your garage with the lights off so you can see any arcing. I suggest jacking the car up and sliding underneath to get a better view.

Re: ignition problem

my mechanic seems to think it is the fuel pump not being able to hold pressure that is causing the problem.. hmm...
