Idiot Lights On
Idiot Lights On
I have a 1995 Z28. I installed a quick disconnect on my battery. During installation I quickly touched the terminal to the battery and it sparked. when I was done I started the car and my antilock, airbag, & check engine dash lights are all on. The car runs fine. When I took it to a mech. he hooked a computer to it and it would not communicate with the onboard comp. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated........Todd
Re: Idiot Lights On
The likely answer to the communication problem was that your 95 has an OBDII ALDL connector but the system is still OBDI. Chances are his scanner will only work with OBDII and it wouldn't work with your PCM. This is a typical problem at Auto Zone. Their scanner plugs into your diagnostic port but it can't read OBDI systems.
As far the dash lights is concerned, check all the fuses and all the exterior lights to see if they will light.

Re: Idiot Lights On
First thing to do is check fuses, especially the fuse to the cigarette lighter. This is the circuit that powers your ALDL port that a scanner is plugged into.
As speedygonzales said, the Actron scanner like autozone and many other places use will not communicate with the 95's pcm; perhaps your mechanic isn't aware of the 95 year switch over by GM where it looks like you have an OBDII system but is actually OBDI. Check with your mechanic to see if his scanner is OBDI compatible.
Your airbag and anti-lock will not show up on a typical low buck scanner. I hope for the best for you on this. Typically a spark when attaching cables does no harm unless you accidentally crossed neg and pos and your computer somehow got the reversed current.

Re: Idiot Lights On
Thanks for the replys!! After my local mechanic told me of the no comunication I brought it to Chevy and they found the same problem, but would not work on it because of a aftermarket stereo system. I will check the fuses and lights. Thanks again
