Identify cam?

Here's our story, we bought a 1995 Trans Am with a 350 GM replacement motor that has 40,000 miles. Is there any way to identify a cam that is installed without pulling it from the engine? Long story on the car, for now all we know is that it has a mild comp cam installed. I pulled the valve covers and saw that it has 1.56 (.52?) Comp Cams roller rockers and valve springs. The good news is that the engine is clean and sludge free. The bad news is that we want to get it tuned but have no idea what cam was installed. The previous owner bought the car the way it sits now so he has no idea either. Thanks!

Well..you can use a dial indicator to determine lift and in conjunction with a degree wheel you can figure out the duration.

Checking lift at the retainer with a dial indicator will be difficult with hydraulic lifters. Accurate measurement is best accomplished by replacing the lifter with a solid or blocked hydraulic.

Thanks for the replies. I called my tuner and he said he will be using a dyno to tune, so it really doens't matter about cam size, he will be tuning off of the O2 band. I'd still like to know what's in there though. Oh well......
