I messed up. Added too much oil/now ticking.

I have the Intake manifold leak, I add about a quart or so of oil every other day.

I added oil 3 days in a row, today I did not check the oil level and added another quart.

Went on highway and got on it, and it was just a dog. Drove it for about a hour and I noticed oil level way too low, temp gague started to creep up alothough it never went into the red, it was uncomfortably close. The temp gague started to creep up also.

I Developed a ticking noise and pulled over to garage, looked at oil level it it was 5" up on the dipstick, I really messed up.

Very cool garage guy drained the oil and the oil pressure went back to semi normal, the ticking continues though, not so much at idle but under load anothing over 2k you can hear ticking.

How bad am I? Anyone know what the ticking noise could be?

The ticking noise could be anything from a lifter to a loose spark plug. A rocker arm ball that's gauled due to low oil pressure could cause a tick as well.
I'd drail ALL the oil, change the filter and see what happends. The problem with too much oil in the engine is that it airreates the system and renders your oil useless. If only some of the oil was drained that means that you still have air impregnated oil in your motor. Change it and it should fix the problem.

From what you've described I think it's still ok..........if it was knocking then you'd have some trouble

actually mine developed a ticking noise about a year ago and it ended up that i spun a bearing. i really would get that manifold leak fixed. if your engines not messed up this time, it could be next time. its a lot cheaper to fix the leak than spend $4k on a new motor like i did.

fyi- mine started out doing it over a certain rpm. then it eventually (like a couple days later) started ticking all the time and getting a lot louder. good luck.

honestly, i dont have the first clue on how to tell. i had to take mine to a mechanic and he had to dig into it.

this is only a thought. dont get your hopes down yet. take it to someone you trust! its easy to get ripped off anymore. dont tell him what you think is wrong. just ask him what he thinks it is. try a few different places if you dont get a good feeling about this guy. it would be really easy for them to say that it was a spun bearing and charge you $4k.

where is the ticking coming from? top of motor, in the valley? only top of valve covers? if you can narrow down where it's coming from, may be able to better help you.

A way to check for the tic's location is to use a thesescope (sp?) If you can't get one, use a long socket exstention and put it on the valve cover. Put your thumb over the end of the exstention and the put you ear to your thumb. You should be able to hear the inside of your motor. If it gets more audable at the valve cover or the intake then it's most likely a lifter or somewhere in the valve train.
Next jack the car up and do the same thing on the oil pan. If it's more auable then you have lower end probs. I'd change the oil before I performed any tests though.

I changed the oil and the filter. And oil pressure incresed a bit. The noise is still presant. When you start it up and drive it a bit cold, it sounds exactally like a deisel engine.

I brought to my uncle last night who is a Master mechanic (45+ years experience), and after a drive and a few very close listens( yes he got on the ground to listen to oil pan). He believes it is the rod bearings. He also believes it is not just one, be believes many of them have been damaged.

He recommended a quart of DuraLube in the motor and that will help quiet things tremendously. He said to use that untill I make a decision about what to do to repair this.

Well, sorry to hear it, but if you need any help on building a new motor then I'm sure that a very large percentage of people on this board could help you with any questions. I've had my motor out about 3 different times if you've got any questions.

I'm sorry man...but if the bearings are damaged it doesn't matter if you add a quart of **** lube....the engine will need a rebuild...don't drive it..you will just make it worse. You don't want to throw a rod out the side of the block.
